Speaking from experience I believe that emerging adults are both healthy and unhealthy because there are some that take nutrition seriously, and then there are some that do not take it seriously at all. I would consider myself as an emerging adult, and I know that I try to keep myself in good physical shape however there a lot of people my age that do not care much at all about their body. Which in my opinion is kind of sad because it can come back to harm them later on in life as we learned in our discussion in chapter eleven.

It comes as no surprise, in that, people should be considered adults at the age of 18 by reason of legally speaking, being considered an adult and additionally, I don’t think a few people should be considered adults at the age of 18. I believe being considered an adult could perhaps depend on your level of development, mixed with your preceding insight on life skills. Young adults are faced with many challenges in their lives. Just like challenges, there are also different paths that can be chosen as a young adult matures. These paths lead them to their future friends, their future careers, and their future lives. As these young adults get older they may reflect on the choices they have made and see if they are satisfied with where their choices have lead them and where they stand in today’s world. They may also take with them into old age lessons they have learned and can help others learn from.

I think that social workers wouldn’t understand the emerging adulthood as it’s new and different. Arnett stated that in Emerging adulthood that young people are still experiencing where they try new things that involves love and work without having lasting plans. Young people are still uncertain what they want at the age of 25 with we all know marriage is not the case. “It’s the first time you walk into school your freshman year” I’ve heard, “It’s the day you walk up the stage graduate” others have said, referring to the moment you enter adulthood of course. For me it was neither, rather it was everything inbetween. I have no idea who expects you to take your first step into high school and just know what to do like an adult would. On my first day of freshman year I was completely helpless; I had to something rear for a child to do, figure it out. I had to find the right person to ask for directions to my first class. Once my first class was located I thought things would return to “normal” and it would be just like class in middle school. Oh was I wrong. Every teacher handed out a syllabus, a word that had no meaning to me prior, with class expectations detailing a number of rules and responsibilities you should have for the class.

Adulthood is the life course stage I occupy. I’m not a young adult but not middle-aged either. I am twenty-eight years old.

Erickson’s developmental theory is that there are eight stages of the life from birth to death, young adulthood (stage of intimacy) starts after adolescence (stage of self identity and independence) at age 18. In the young adulthood stage you would seek out mutually compatible relationships (marriage and friends), start your own family and be self–supporting since you had already developed your own identity. The idea of emerging adulthood is considered to be a new stage in life, which is the developmental time between adolescence and young adulthood; the normal age range would be 18-25. Adolescent’s can transition towards adulthood at any point in time during their life. Major events or even smaller tragedies can lead that switch of being just a regular child into a full grown adult within seconds, whether mentally, physically, and/or emotionally. This shift drastically impacted my life at the ripe age of nine years old. My transition commenced when my mother fell into the oblivion of her unknown illness which left me motherless and alone for months at a time.
