Furthermore, Emmett is a very self-loathing character, everything he has done has caused him to hate himself. For instance, whenever someone like Emmett starts to make bad decisions, it is usually because of a loved one. In his case, he wasn’t able to protect the woman he falls in love with, Araxie. It was his fault terrible things happen to Araxie, he helps deport all of the Armenians. Her being one of them, she loses her home because of him. Araxie tells Emmett, “All our homes had been taken by Turks. An old Turkish woman answered the door to my house.” (277). Even when their mother, Carol passed away, his relationship with his daughters only worsened. Emmett remembers his wife's funeral, “I remember Carol’s funeral. So similar - many of those present today were there then. I sat with Violet and Lissette but could not look at my daughters. Their mother who cared for them all the length of their lives, yet at the end they were not there for her” (20). He blamed himself for not raising his daughters better, for not teaching them better. He will never understand where he went wrong, why his daughters disappear on their mother when she gets ill. As well, his entire life he pushes away his past. He pushes his past away so much that when he loses his memory, he never cares to go looking for it. The best analogy of the phoenix is a magnificent bird. The phoenix has astonishing powers. It has the knack to materialize and vanish in the blink of an eye. The myth states the phoenix travels to the sun. The sun gives the phoenix it powers. The heat incinerates the bird. The bird is reborn from the ashes. Jeremy is extremely intelligent and is smarter than many teenagers his age. He is in algebra 2 honors which usually us a 10th grade math clas. Also, he participates in biology honors and manages the diffuculty very well. Unfortunately, he didn't try out for English honors since he didn't have a specific teacher but ended up having him anyways.His favorite academic achievements is when in 7th grade, when he got the highest English grade in the whole seeker team. He was extremely proud of himself and strives to do great.

He was not only physically abused but also mentally and psychologically.

Each of these supporting characters possess a certain magical ability that assisted the monk on his journey, additionally they had their own flaws. This contrasts the monk, which has no magical ability and was devoted buddhism. The strengths, weaknesses, and backgrounds of these supporting characters encapsulate the idea of buddhism throughout the novel, and by including them and Xuanzang the book is able to summarize the idea of buddhism.
