Counsellors do not offer advice as such but instead give an insight into a client’s feelings and behaviour and they help the client to change their behaviour accordingly. They do this by actively listening to what the client has to say and comment from a professional perspective. Counsellors are trained to be effective helpers, especially in sensitive and difficult situations. They have to be independent, very neutral and professional as well as respecting the privacy and confidentiality of a client. Counselling can help clients to clarify their problems, identify the changes they wish to make and give them a fresh perspective. Counsellors should help them to seek other options and look at the impact that life events have made on the

Hardships that might prompt distress to incorporate the death or departure of a friend or family member, loss of a vocation, demise or loss of a cherished pet, or any number of different changes in life. Anybody can encounter melancholy and misfortune. However, every individual is extraordinary by the way he or she acclimatizes to these attitudes. In dealing with grief counseling, it can be described and understood as a form of therapy that explicitly focuses on the goal of helping individuals grieve and address their personal loss in a manner that is not only healthy for them but the people around them. To work through difficult feelings, thoughts, and memories that have to do with an associated pain of an individual is the goal of a grief counselor. Many of these strains and types of loss can include goals, ideals, and relationships. There is a process of grieving that many individuals do not understand, this can lead to many problems for that individual because the process is something normal to go through to cope with the given issue. Some of the symptoms that a person may go through are emotional numbness, disruptive sleep, short temperateness, lack of eating, and depression just to name a
Both parents report the child has been exposed to ongoing conflict between the parents, and have been experiencing significant inner conflict and sadness regarding the current family situation. The data gathered during the current evaluation suggest that the parents tried to support the child mental health interventions, however both parents pursued treatment for the child at different locations. When considering therapy, mental health counseling is typically what most people think of regarding the word. However, mental health counseling has a unique approach that brings an extensive definition to the meaning of care CITATION Smi95 l 1033 (Smith & Robinson, 1995). Mental health counselors (MHC) have a board understanding and responses that contributes to the development of the counseling profession. Most mental health counselors assist individuals how to cope during difficult life events such as relationship issues and the death of a loved one, while others help manage mental disorder/illness like depression or bipolar disorders. Throughout chronicle of events regarding counseling, many individuals perceived the term ‘counseling’ in the wrong manner. People believed that counseling was used as a way of guidance rather than a person who listens and help resolve issues. Counseling was not properly introduced until the late 1890s, where it was considered less of assistance and more of a form of advice. It was during the Industrial Revolution, when the concern to improve the lives of the citizens involved increased the need of counseling. During this period, large array of individuals such as teachers and social reformers focused on educating the younger generations about the world around them CITATION Han12 l 1033 (Hanson, 2012). Though both counseling and guidance focuses on helping, there is a major difference between the two. Counseling is used primarily to help the
Natural and man-made disasters, crises, and other trauma-causing events have become a focus of the clinical mental health counseling profession because of the need to help people who experience such events and who may develop psychological disorders that arises from them. PTSD is a crippling outcome of many of these disasters and accounts for a large percentage of the major effects to not only those experiencing the disaster first hand, but also to the first-responders and members of the affected communities (Satcher, 2007).
“Mental health and wellbeing can positively affect almost every area of a person’s life: education, employment, family and relationships. It can help people achieve their potential, realise their ambitions, cope with adversity, work productively and contribute to their community and society. Promoting mental health and wellbeing has multiple benefits. It improves health outcomes, life expectancy, productivity and educational and economic outcomes and reduces violence and crime.” (The Department of Health, 2010)
Personal coping skills are essential throughout the course of an individual’s life. These skills are often taken advantage of and over seen, but have a direct effect on the health of individuals. Personal coping skills refers to promoting self-care, coping with challenges, and making choices that enhance health. However, personal coping skills are influenced by social, economic, and environmental factors (PHAC, 2013). These factors make it extremely difficult to maintaining and promoting health and people may adopt unhealthy coping behaviours such as excessive use of alcohol or smoking. Personal coping skills are important because they help to promote a healthy lifestyle. Although establishing and maintaining theses skills can be challenging, it has major benefits to health. People with good coping skills are better able to deal with events, challenges and stress, can make informed choices and adopt healthy behaviours and lifestyles. The Ottawa Charter (1986) explains that through developing personal skills, it enables individuals to have more control over their own health, over their environments, and to make choices conducive to health.
As counselling emphasises the present and recent past, and the aim should be to help the person deal with the loss. Being in a supportive and trusting atmosphere the bereaved person should be encouraged to open up about the dearly departed and not be judge for the way they are feeling. This will help then through the grief and help them move on in life, it doesn’t mean they are forgetting the person just means they can live their life without them
This last September I lost my best friend after my mother was diagnosed with leukemia. My whole world tilted on its axis. My family and friends were my everything. Through these experiences though, I discovered myself growing that world. I have seen how difficult it can be to keep good mental health when horrible things happen. Because of this, I spend large amounts of time volunteering at the middle schools around town. I often discuss strategies for good mental health. Whether it’s about general awareness, drug abuse or the struggles of just being okay, I find the kids and I both benefit from the experience.
Over a period of seven weeks, I volunteered my time to the Regina Qu'Appelle Health Region at the Regina General Hospital in the Adult Mental Health Ward. This ward is generally a short-term intervention plan for adults in our community with mental health disorders. This is a broad definition to include many mental health issues from severe depression to schizophrenia to anxiety disorders. The role of the volunteer within this area of healthcare is to support the staff while providing companionship to the patients. There are several wards one may volunteer in within just the General Hospital. However, I chose Adult Mental Health for personal interest and in order to explore where I hope to be with my future career. Furthermore, I was interested
