What is the purpose of an epic? There must be a logical explanation to how they could still exist after all this time. Even stranger most people do not realize how regularly they show up. For example, when they read a story, watch a movie, or even play a video game, each and every one of them gives a story with an epic hero. Epics play a huge part in the world’s history from the B.C. ages to now. They show their dreams and values from there culture. Even now in America’s culture they play a bigger part then anyone could ever imagine. People do not realize that “[everyone] must fight [their] own Grendels and dragons – [as well as their own] inner and outer demons,” as said on page 55. Beowulf’s people loved him, as seen when it says “kindest to his people and keenest to win fame,” (842). Captain Americas people, on the other hand, did not love him as much instead they kind of made fun of him but he still achieves fame later on. Steve Rogers believes in god, they know this because in the “Avengers,” he tells Black widow that there is only one god. While in “Beowulf,” they do not, as shown on page 7 where it says the Anglo – Saxon England cutler believes in “animinsm.” They also differ in the sense that Beowulf does not save the prisoner Grendel’s mom takes, this proven when it says “Edgetho’s son, and died there,” (628). While Captain America saves his friend and the POW from the Red Skull. The last big one, Beowulf dies after his last battle, this evident when it says, “twelve warriors road around the tomb,” (829). In Captain America the First Avenger it shows that he survived the airship crash but gets unfrozen after 70 years. Both Beowulf and Steve Rogers share their similarities and difference that represent their culture, but why do we tell epic stories like
