Have you ever been inside a real man’s home? There are no pizza boxes sitting around, there are no undershirts on the floor, and there sure arent any unpaid bills being used as beer coasters. No one can master his professional or personal life if he isn’t already the master of his own home; meaning the term lazy doesn't exist (Am i a man article sec 2 ) . The word can't is one that will never be used. Waiting for the next blessing to be handed to him will never happen because a real man believes in working for everything that he owns or set his mind to own in his near or prolonged future. Being satisfied with just money isn't on his mind because he truly know that it's more to life than just money. If luck is sent his way he will then feel …show more content…
Being right or wrong doesn't make him upset , he simply owns up to it because in the end he knows God has him . He will go hard at all times even if it means to fight to defend his property until he dies , he will do that . Backing down is something he will never do . Simply because that's the man in him. Just as the author of Beowulf once stated “For every one of us, living in this world means waiting for our end. Let whoever can win glory before death. When a warrior is gone, that will be his best and only bulwark…Endure your troubles today. Bear up and be the man I expect you to be” (Unknown). Living another way than such is a complete disgrace . Having qualities or appearance that's traditionally associated with men, especially strength and aggressiveness is everything. Meaning Masculinity is everything. This means dominance, power, and being in control is everything also. Meaning Beowulf is the perfect example of a man whose very …show more content…
The story starts off by presenting each man as beast who loves to fight . Sooner than ever Beowulf a young warrior who was left alone to grow with his father's inherits beside him such as his father's throne , and his name to up hold to the highest degree and in which he does. From the beginning of the tale Beowulf gets into an altercation with a guy name Grendel and in the midst of the fight Beowulf rips off Grendel's arm from his body. This in particular shows his man power , that not only is Beowulf a man but he is also part beast. Meaning he destroyed Grendel like a vicious animal. Beowulf is then applauded by others who shows him a little fun due to the killing of Grendel . Sooner than ever as the tale goes on Beowulf gets into another altercation with Grendel's mother who is highly upset with the death of her son . Beowulf later sees Grendel's mother in a cave. He tries to hit her with his sword, the sword fails to puncture her skin. So he throws the sword down and attacks Grendel’s mother with his bare hands. As he trusts his masculinity Beowulf manages to throw Grendel's mother down; however, she quickly retaliates and is sitting on top of Beowulf. Grendel mother then tries to kill Beowulf with a dagger, but Beowulf's armor protects him. As he throws Grendel’s mother off he sees a gigantic sword immediately grabs it . Low and behold The great masculine Beowulf
Beowulf started his journey to the horrible place known as the Chili Cook Off. He knew that he might not return for this place but he needed to prove that no chili can defeat the great one known as Beowulf. He walked into the sign up booth to enter his name, he writes his name as BEOWULF: THE UNDEFEATED ONE. He entered the great hall of chili and smelt a smell that was only for the gods, but the gods let this smell enter the mortal world for one day. Beowulf knew that he will embrace this smell for as long as he can. He grabbed his weapons of choice, the styrofoam bowl and the plastic spoon. He reached the first challenged known as the Sweet and Tangy Chili.
Beowulf, now an old man, says in his final boast, “I’ve never known fear, as a youth I fought in endless battles. I am old, now, but I will fight again” (lines 607-609). Beowulf realizes the dangers of going into battle as an old man, and despite still knowing that his strength and fighting skills were not what they used to be still goes into battle against the ferocious dragon in order to protect his homeland from the villain. Unfortunately, as Beowulf was fighting saw that “for a time (the shield) held, protected Beowulf as he’d planned; then it began to melt, and for the first time in his life that famous prince fought with fate against him, with glory denied him. He knew it, but he raised his sword and struck at the dragon’s scaly hide/And the Geats’ ring-giver did not boast of glorious victories in other wars” (lines 666-671/678). As Beowulf fights the dragon, he comes to realize that he is not going to win and is going to meet his fate. All the battles he had previously fought had him fighting alongside fate, not against it, but now he realized that this is the battle he would not win. Still, Beowulf fights on knowing he would die. He, as stated in the quote, does not seek any pride nor has he in any of his battles and would valiantly fight until his death. These actions Beowulf has portrayed ultimately
A prolific and boastful hero prince who goes on many breathtaking and daring adventures that would, later on, come back to bite him in the end. This heroic tale was greatly known as “Beowulf”. Which was written around the 8th through the 11th century by an Anglo-Saxon poet. The intended audience for this story were the soldiers that followed Beowulf into battle, to instill confidence and bravery or the soldiers from other countries that were in conflict with or against Beowulf, to instill fear in the soldiers. The Beowulf tale was an oral tradition told by poets or bards before and after battles; while the warriors drank, ate, and sang. Beowulf is about a warrior prince coming to the aid of King Hrothgar of Denmark who is tormented by a demon
Beowulf, is a poem about Beowulf himself killing monsters, and other humans who are not doing right. This poem is the oldest poem in the English language that is still being used in the education programs today. Beowulf rips people’s arms off, kills five monsters, and goes to save the people of Herot. Throughout the play Beowulf's followers continue to praise him for all his accomplishments In the epic poem Beowulf, Beowulf shows how to get glory from people, how to complete a mission, and how to keep your strenght.
Whether you are arguing with your siblings, with a stranger at a baseball game, during a debate, with your parents or children, you are fighting for what you believe is right. You perceive yourself as the “victim” in the situation by trying to justify your reasoning behind the argument. Some people may perceive you as the good or as the evil because they believe that you have done nothing wrong, you were being perverse or fighting for the wrong reason. The epic poem Beowulf, is a super-eminent literary example that represents the good and evil in the characters and what they are fighting for. In this fictional poem, in which the author is unknown, the protagonist Beowulf encounters three major battles with a monster named Grendel, Grendel’s Mother, and a dragon. Each character is fighting for a certain reason and believe their reason is more dominant. The two audiences that view the characters as good or evil is the Danes and the narrator. Since the characters in the poem believe they're justified in their actions, they prove to not be all evil or all good. In fact, they should be judged based on the rationale behind their actions to fight.
Not only is Beowulf honorable and well respected, he is brave as well. His courage is shown by not hesitating to risk his own life to pursue the Dane’s enemies. By being self-assured, Beowulf is able to successfully defeat the fiends, Grendel and his infamous mother. At the time Beowulf is planning to pursue the vindictive dragon, the epic poem states, “I’ve never known fear, as a youth I fought in endless battles. I am old now, but I will fight again, seek fame still, If the dragon hiding in his tower dares to face me.”(ll. 2511-2515). He feels no fear, is confident in fighting the dragon alone, and has no qualms in risking his life to save others. He declares his bravery by saying, “When he comes to me I mean to stand, not run from his shooting flames, stand till fate decides which of us wins... No one else could do what I mean to, here, no man but me could hope to defeat this monster.”(ll. 2525-2534). In his actions, Beowulf’s bravery is clearly shown throughout the poem.
Every epic hero possesses certain heroic characteristics. Beowulf, like other epic heroes, possesses the following heroic qualities: epic heroes are superhuman types of beings. They have a noble birth and show great bravery. They display great intelligence and resourcefulness. They have a reverence for G-d and for the values of their society. They are dominant male figures and suffer severe pain, but in the end, they conquer evil (Vivone 9/27/99). In addition to Beowulf’s heroic qualities, he is very strong. Beowulf was said to have “the strength of thirty [men] in his mighty handgrip” (Bloom 11). Early proof of Beowulf’s extraordinary strength is evidenced by his dismemberment of Grendel’s limb, the fight in the cave under water, and the
Monsters, their mothers, and dragons! The epic poem Beowulf, author unknown, includes all these mystical creatures and an impervious protagonist after which the poem is named. As the main character in the poem, Beowulf exemplifies the heroic archetype physically, spiritually, and ethically.
In his three major battles, Beowulf fights for many different reasons. His motivation varies, and as he grows older and wiser his attitude toward these battles also changes. Throughout the epic, Beowulf bradoshously beats Grendel, then more methodically murders Grendel’s mother, and with his last breathes humbly hollers for help to slay the dragon. This shows that Beowulf’s early focuses of glory and riches changes as he becomes a weathered warrior acknowledges that he cannot defeat his enemies alone and must utilize the resources provided to him such as armor, magical items, and companions.
An evaluation of Beowulf’s Motives For Duty and Self Worth As the great Walt Disney once said “If you can dream it, you can do it.” Many people will question what motivates us to do the things that we love. I myself was very curious as to see what my families’ responses would be as to what motivates them to get their day started in the morning. My sisters’ response was that she had to go to school or else she wouldn’t get her day started and my Mom said that it was her duty to get up in the morning to help get us up and moving for school.
Beowulf is an epic story written in the English language. Originally only spoken not written. The story is about Beowulf accepting a quest to defend Herot from Monsters for the treasure and fame. Beowulf is our main character in this epic story who has the strength of 30 thanes and is the bravest around. As Beowulf sets out for this journey his partner Wiglaf and his men are there to help him throughout the journey.
In this quote, Beowulf is getting ready to meet Grendel’s mother in her underwater lair. Beowulf is ready and does not fear death. He would rather fight until he dies instead of giving up a fight. No other human being would even think to try to defeat Grendel, or even think about trying to defeat Grendel’s mother.
In a mighty kingdom named Herot, many men and women lived happily under the power of their king Hrothgar. The only thing that would ruin their happiness and joy would be this monster named Grendel. Grendel lived beneath the kingdom, he was hateful and forged in slime. Grendel was a monster born of Cain, he was banned by God for his murderous death of his brother. Grendel attacked the kingdom during the night when the men were sleeping. He killed many of the men that were trying to kill him.
This battle takes place in a cave after Beowulf had tracked her to a bog until he found the spot where the water was on fire. Once there he jumps in and swims for a whole day until he found the cave. In this battle he wears his armor and takes a sword by the name of Hrunting. It was Hrothgar’s sword and Unferth carried it for the sea-geat. So with all this gear he swims through the water until he happens upon Grendel’s mum who grabs him and tries to hurt him, though to no avail. Beowulf gets pinned and the sea monsters come around him and tear at him, which does hurt him a little. He finally gets his arm free and swings Hrunting at the mother of evil but it breaks upon her head. Then she pulls a dagger on him and tries to stab him but his armor protects him. Then he sees a sword off to the side that he grabs and stabs her with. The sword is supernatural and doesn’t break on her but after he cuts the head off of the hell thane, the sword dissipates and only the hilt is left. The hilt depicts a great flood, which supposedly was supposed to have killed Grendel and his mum but they were able to survive in their cave and made it alive. So the bold thane has fought with Grendel and his mum and still he stands.
J.D.A. Ogilvy and Donald C. Baker in “Beowulf’s Heroic Death” comment on the hero’s culpability in his final conflict:
