Individuality means being distinct from others, and that is what makes all of us special. When individuality gets suppressed, the potential we have as a human being is gone. As a result, we would all be mentally and physically the same as others. Equality 7-2521 is a young man who lives in a brotherhood where he’s brainwashed, and taught that equality is essential; he is taken away his aspects of being different from others. He’s an intelligent, good-looking guy who knew since he was a kid that he’s different from his society. He realizes that he wants to follow his own desires and be free, so he fights for what he believes in with his lover and friends. Similarly, Harrison is a genius guy who lives in a society where his intelligence is controlled
It brought us the Civil Right Movement to help black people get their rights and help destroy some of the cultural divides in america causing overall equal treatment . So individuality maybe seem hard and impossible but people have done great things with it. In conscience in the novel The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier showcases a story about a Jerry and showcases some of the negative of individuality with how it affects his personal, social life and the social expectations and pressures he
Equality contemplates, “I wonder, for it is hard for me to conceive how men who knew the word “I”, could give it up and not know what they lost” (103). This quote narrates the discovery of one of the most essential words used to identify as a single, original person, I. Equality realizes the tragedy of the loss that his previous society created before his lifetime and really ponders why and how this could happen in a very separate world. Equality readies himself to be an individual person as a result of feeling strongly against the beliefs of his previous society. Equality excitedly states, “We made a fire, we cooked the bird, and we ate it, and no meal had ever tasted better to us. And we thought suddenly that there was a great satisfaction to be found in the food which we need and obtain by our own hand” (79). In the past, Equality had never done anything to express his originality because of the law stating otherwise, so when given the opportunity to finally understand his own strengths and weaknesses, he takes it. He disregards the law and excitedly grasps the concept that he isn’t supposed to be a follower like his peers were, he was meant to be a leader. Disagreeing with the law was a main point of Rand’s novella, promoting personal
Individualism can mean a lot of things. It tends to show a different meaning depending on the person you ask. Is there a way Individualism can change the world? Could Individualism somehow be a bad thing? Individualism can change the world. In the 19th century people stuck to society. If they really did something out of character to show their personalities, they would most likely be executed. In "The Crucible" they were accused of witchcraft if they didn't act like society. Then they would either have to confess or be hanged in front of everyone. John Proctor stood up and vowed that there was no such thing as witchcraft in the end and showed everyone there with his personality that there was no such thing as witches. They probably felt foolish
Do you stand alone as a unique and special individual? Since the beginning of American history there have been struggles for individualism. The American Revolution, the American Civil War, and the separation from family life are all examples of individualism in American history. Individualism is an American paradigm designed by the modern societal structure that is an altered idea of the foundation by immigrants. In today’s society the struggle for individualism is more personal and represents how American values have shifted since the beginning of American history.
Nowadays, individuality is perched on top of the highest pedestal. There's nothing that compares with the ability to stand apart from each other and no one dares take that away. But in Ayn Rand’s novella called Anthem, it is the complete opposite; there are numerous Councils who are in charge of everything for the people. Some of the things include, what jobs and what future people have and also they regulate intelligence and inventions. Equality 7-2521, later renamed Prometheus, is a member of this dystopian society; he isn't at all similar to his brothers. This, leads to his urge to break away from them. The Council and the society damn him because of his actions and brain, but after his escape, he realizes this damnation is hilarious because they are the damned, not him.
Set in a dystopian society in the future, the novella Anthem written by Ayn Rand is all about being a collective society which doesn’t believe in individualism. Ayn Rand constructs a society in which individualism is a transgression. The government enforces the idea of collectivism to the society. They believe that in the human race each person is not single. The protagonist, Equality 7-2521 wants to be an independent person. He wants to be free. As stated in the novel, “To be free, a man must be free of his brothers.” This statement means that in order to be successful, he has to be his own person. As the novel goes on Equality 7-2521 learns to be an independent man and frees himself from the society which forces collectivism.
“We strive to be like all our brother men, for all men must be alike”(7). In Equality 7-2521's society, everyone must think and be just like everyone else. The society's commitment to Equality 7-2521 eventually means a confinement to sameness. If the individuals are not like everyone else, the Council Of Vocations threaten them by using brutal punishments for every law that is broken, they also threaten them from possibly being superior to others. It can be argued that it is moral to act in an individual’s own self-interest to find joy. Self-sacrifice is not an obligation. Collectivism states that people should exist for the co-operation for others and that the pursuance of individual happiness is not preachy. The dominance of mankind’s free will and the reason is most evident in the distant marble engraving in the Palace of the World Council, “We are one in all and all in one. There are no men but only the great WE, One, indivisible and forever” (6). "Dare not choose in your minds the work you would like to do when you leave the Home of the Students. You shall do that which the Council of Vocations shall prescribe for you" (20). Equality 7-2521 is proclaiming about what his teachers told him when he was a student. Evidently, in his society, no one is allowed to think or choose what they want to do with their own lives, or even to think about what they are capable enough of doing in their lives. These were
There are many examples in the book anthem where individuality is lost. The Council controls everything from the day they are born. They are all given a name by the Council, which is like the rest of them, which cuts the creativeness of life around them. At school, they were all brainwashed to make everyone, including Equality to know “There are no men, but only the great WE, One, indivisible and forever.”(Pg.19) The teachers were demanded by the Council to teach that philosophy. The teachers didn’t allow questions being asked because it’s expanding their minds and want an answer for it. “ “We asked so many questions that the teachers forbade it.” (pg.23). Equality always had questions because he wanted to expand his mind and knows he is smarter than
In the society of Ayn Rand’s novel Anthem, it is a crime to show any individuality, and it is a reminder of how some people fear being themselves in today’s society. In the novel Equality 7-2521, the main character, knows that they are different from everyone else they know. However, they are forced to hide it because they know that they will be punished for these thoughts. When Equality 7-2521 has these thoughts, they must say to themselves, “We are one in all and all in one. There are no men but only the great WE, One, indivisible and forever” (Rand 19). Equality 7-2521 is forced to be a follower, which I can connect to my own life. Today, it can seem like it is wrong to be a certain way or to have certain interests. Because of this, many
Similarly this goes along with the viewpoints of an individualist, Equality should still be able to try his best to test his wisdom for himself as well as the Council of Scholars. Although from the viewpoint of a collectivist, Equality is not making the right decision of taking his own time to do his experiments. In their society, the values are that you treat all men the same and do everything for the better of everyone not just yourself. “We strive to be like our brother men, for all men must be alike.” (19) The quote from Chapter One shows the strict morals of the collectivist atmosphere Equality is living in. They also believe that their mind is only as great as their brothers. "How dared you think that your mind held greater wisdom than the minds of your brothers?...how dared your... to hold yourself as one alone and with the thought of one and not the many."
In Anthem the main character, Equality 7-2521, has made multiple transgression throughout the book however, the transgression that changes him the most would be his discovery. When Equality 7-2521 makes his discovery he has a different attitude about the rules and the society that he lives in “We do not care. We forget all men, all laws and all things save our metals and our wires.” In this chapter he develops a new attitude towards the rules an attitude of not caring about what the council says is right instead he only cares about what he wants to do. When Equality 7-2521 develops this new character trait of not caring it makes is so it is possible for him to make more advanced discoveries in the future as he won’t have the mindset of everything
In Ayn Rand’s dystopian novel Anthem, she communicates on the value of individualism in societal growth through the characterization of Equality 7-2521. Equality 7-2521 expresses individualism by thinking his own original thoughts which is illegal in the society that he lives in. One example of Equality 7-2521 having individualism was when he finds a new and improved way to make light by storing electricity into a glass box as he says, “We, Equality 7-2521 have a new power of nature...and we are alone to know it” (Rand 27). In this statement Equality 7-2521 says he found a new power on his own and knows he can be punished because it was his own independent thought. It is in this example where he decides to present his new invention as a gift to the World Council of Scholars. He acknowledges the fact that he might be punished for the crime of working alone, but believes that the gift of innovation would outweigh the crime committed and that he would be forgiven. A month later when he is presenting his gift to the World Council of Scholars, he says, “Give no thought to us...for we hold the future of mankind in our hands” (Rand 40). In this statement Equality 7-2521 tells the World Council of Scholars that the invention he was holding was the future of mankind. He says it is the future of mankind because of the way he had his freedom to think his own thoughts to put electricity into a glass box to make a great replacement for a candle. Equality 7-2521’s using his own thoughts and ideas to make the glass box is an example of the value of individualism societal growth. This theme is reflected in the character of Harrison Bergeron Kurt Vonnegut’s “Harrison Bergeron”.
Often in our society, people stifle their individuality in an attempt to fit in with others. This idea is taken a step further in both “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut and “Brave New World” by Aldous Huxley. These texts demonstrate different ways in which one can surrender their unique traits and how when people lack individuality, they lose aspects of themselves that make them human such as thoughts and emotions. In Vonnegut’s text, people who have talents that exceed others are required to wear handicaps so that everyone is equal. In Huxley’s text, embryos are engineered and trained after birth to be the same in adulthood. In both stories, the authors use description and dialogue to show the reader how individuality is critical to humanity because if everyone is the same eventually they become less human and start acting more like machines.
The mature Christian response to individualism is to be able to fully embrace individuality while still being able to support the value of collectivism. Individualism is often seen to be contradictory to collectivism, but if applied towards altruism it can stand as a crucial role in collectivism. According to Wilkens and Sanford, individualism is the belief that the individual is the primary reality and our understanding of the universe and lifestyle should be centered on the self. However, individualism could be helpful to a community through one’s self-improvement and an individual can be a great asset to their community by displaying a certain diversity. “Indeed, the body does not consist of one member but of many. If the foot were to
Individuality, in theory, is almost always counted as an admirable trait. Practically speaking, the path of the individual is more often derided and regarded as foolhardy or selfish. No one can know what is truly in the heart and soul of another individual or what drives them, but one has to wonder how much of their motivation is pushing themselves toward some aspirational ideal versus pulling away and rejecting their roots in society. Chris McCandless and many others like him have set their mind to that lofty goal -- of achieving a state of total self-reliance and individuality, and to most it is seen as a seemingly pure ambition. That said, one must consider, if their actions are less in hopes of aspiring to a remarkable achievement or more so in the hope of escaping and rebelling against a loss of free thought that accompanies society. Liken to what is represented in John Krakauer’s Into The Wild, the journey on the road to individuality is a long and tedious one. While motives for one's departure from society may allude to being pure and unadulterated - by the push of society itself - oftentimes, individuals stray away from their path and actively work against the society from which they came from. By rejecting society, they infer a judgement on the majorities adherence to social norms.
