The author Ayn Rand said “The question is not who is going to let me, but who is going to stop me.” In a way her main character, Equality 7-2521 goes along with this quote. He did not let anyone stop him from going in the hole in the woods, he did not let anyone stop him from making the light bulb, and he did not let anyone stop him from running away and finding his happiness. He knew writing the book was considered a sin, but writing made him happy so he continued writing. When Equality started to realize everything he had been taught, such as the rules and laws of the society, he thought it was not crucial to his life, he was correct. In the novel the society shouldn’t decide what a human does or thinks, but let them be their own individual.

The Council doesn’t want anyone to be different, or to have different thoughts. Everything in the society is sheltered and unknown, Equality describes nature in a different way than he described anything else in the book. There is a sense of relief, and it is like Equality lets his guard down and is free to be himself for a short amount of time as he describes nature. Equality describes the sky with great detail. He explains the three different colors of the sky at three different times of the day. “The sky is green and cold in our windows to the east” (Rand 27). “Only the glass box in our arms is like a living heart that gives us strength. We have lied to ourselves. We have not built this box for the good of our brothers. Later in the story, especially in the past few sections, he has completely changed his view of his individuality and past actions against the society of his brothers. Prometheus’ view of society is correct, opposed to how he thought when he was Equality 7-2521. He approaches this new prospective and favors it because it has given him the most, and possibly the only, happiness that he’s ever had in his life.

He came to present his invention, but it was going to be like teaching a baby about algebra. Equality 7-2521, later named Prometheus, is the main character in Ayn Rand’s novel Anthem. “It is forbidden to talk to those of another trade” (Rand 40). This is an example of what is forced upon Equality and The Golden One in this dystopic society. In fact, the social rules of this dystopia prohibit any interaction between members of different jobs. There is only a community. Individual thoughts are bad and are a transgression against fellow man. Equality struggles when he finds that he has love for someone, and especially one of another trade because their love is forbidden. Ever heard of a society that does not have an individual? A society that is completely controlled? The book Anthem by Ayn Rand shows a society without an individual. An Anthem is an uplifting song that is identified by a certain body or cause. Ayn Rand wrote Anthem because she grew up in the Soviet Union, where it was a very communist society where people were supposed to be equal, but she saw that other people were higher above her
The sweet sound of a woman's voice singing fills the whole room, and with this, a man stands. This man is in gray and expressionless. Three others as the man stand; all the same. They rush to the women and restrain her. No one is better than anyone. No one must be individual. Reform, stay in line, fairness, unity, equalize and destroy. The women should have not sang if she happened to be better at singing than others around her. . . this is the way. Complete and utter equality between all men can be harmful to one's spirit and humanity.
