Equality In A Totalitarian Society In Ayn Rand's Anthem

Decent Essays

Anthem is a novella written by Ayn Rand that takes place in a totalitarian society where all of the citizens are virtually the same. In the beginning of the book, Equality 7-2521 did not know how bad this government actually was. The society that he lived in did not accept individualistic values, they were based on collectivism. Towards the end, Equality became very critical of the world he was living in. He is correct in doing so, he has his own moral values. Equality was born and raised in a totalitarian society where he was not allowed to speak or think for himself. This society does not have a specified name in the book, but in this world everyone thinks, speaks and expresses themselves in the same way every single day.
