The German author Erich Maria Remarque was born in 1898 in Germany and became a well-known novelist. While in school, Erich wanted to pursue a career in music but had to put that on hold when he enlisted into the German army. He fought on the western front, and was injured many times. After the conclusion of the war Erich began writing, and published his first very successful book in 1929, “All Quite on the Western Front.”
The novel, “All Quite on the Western Front” by Erich Maria Remarque is a story about a young man named Paul Baumer. He enlisted at the age of twenty with a few of his close friends from school. The novel begins with Paul explaining his current situation at the front, and how he and his friends happened to find themselves in the war. At the beginning of the book it explains how one of his comrades had been injured and the process of him passing away. Throughout the book Paul refers to many situations that involve attacks occurring on the front, and how frightening they were for him. The book also describes the struggles in the trenches, the lack of food, and the horrible conditions. In the middle of the novel Paul has the opportunity to go on leave. Death is constantly around Paul and his comrades, which makes them see death as normal. “Two of our dead lie in the unturned graves. We merely throw the earth in on them.” The graphic detail throughout the novel in regard to the dead bodies would provoke a bit of shock within most people, however, for Paul and his companions, it is very common. “We see men living with their skulls blown open; we see soldiers run with their two feet cut off…” Remarque also writes about the humor that Paul and his comrades see in death, because of how frequent they experience it. “He’s been blown out of his clothes, mutters Tjaden.
