Essay: Five Steps To Being A Successful Catcher

Softball is a growing sport for girls within the United States. Whether you are an 8-year-old girl, to a senior in college softball, it’s a sport that many are attached too. A new form of hitting came into play during the 2005 Women’s College Series. Slap hitting is a new form of hitting that changed the way the game of fast-pitch softball is being played. Slapping changed the way coaches and players think about how they are going to field a slap hitter. This form of hitting is becoming a major role within fast-pitch softball. When I got the opportunity to learn how to slap hit I was excited to gain this ability. With practice, patience and determination, I began to learn the hitting style that I use today.

Running, catching, and hitting are some types of actions used in the game of baseball.

Besides of the pitcher and catcher, the main purpose of the infield positions is to field ground balls and getting softballs hit really hard to the players. The outfielder’s positions are meant for the players to catch the popped up balls and back up the infielders. The pitcher is the player who throws the ball underhanded to the batter on the opposing team. The catcher is the player who catches the pitcher and usually directs the field. The pitcher also helps direct the softball field. When the players are not in the field playing defense they are on offense, batting. When the players are on offense the coach of the team makes a roster of who will bat where and one after another the players will get ready to bat in the batter’s box against the opposing team’s pitcher. The purpose of batting is to hit the softball that is pitched to the player and get on base.

As Katrina Mayer once said “Believe in your dreams. They were given to you for a reason.” As a child, we are always told to follow our dreams. I started playing softball at the age of 6 but started off in T-ball at the age of 3. I knew as soon as I stepped foot on the pitcher's mound during T-ball that is where I wanted to be. As a child, my dream has always been to become an artist. That dream has not changed, it has just evolved over time. Often times I would look for approval from my peers. I felt like I always needed to impress others more than myself. I would try to be a perfect softball player or artist. I have learned that it is okay to make mistakes. Over the summer, I enjoyed camping, playing baseball, and traveling. I went camping on fourth of july weekend at Greenwood Acres campground in Jackson Michigan. I played baseball for the Wyandotte Braves and played in the state tournament. I traveled to five different countries in Europe and saw many historical sites. For starters, batting is a very important part of softball. In batting, there are a few ways to hit. My two favorite ways are bunting and swinging. Bunting is a way to hit the ball so it doesn’t go very far. If someone is on third base, then you should probably swing because if you bunt, there is a very good chance that they will not get to home plate. Home plate is also known as fourth base. There is also a first, second, and a third base. First base is where you run right after you hit the ball. Then, you stay there until the next batter hits. After the next batter hits, you run to second base, while whoever just hit runs to first base. If someone on the opposite team steps on the base that you’re going to with the ball in their hand, then you are out. You can also steal bases which is when you run to the next base whenever the ball leaves the pitcher’s hand. The pitcher is who throws the ball to the batter so they can hit it. When you’re hitting, there are four balls and three strikes. Balls are when the pitcher doesn’t throw accurately and you don’t swing. If you get four balls, you can walk to the base.
