BP oil spill disaster is considered as one of the largest disasters of its magnitude in the US history and thus, one of the largest man-made disasters with huge negative impact on the environment. On 20th April 2010, here was an explosion on the Deep-water Horizon drilling rig, which led to the complete sinking of the offshore rig as well as oil spill that continued for 87 days. Methane gas in the well expanded to the riser and eventually, to the rig. High-pressured gas got inflamed and led to explosion. Two days later, Deep-water Horizon sank in the water completely.
During a routine operation at 9:41pm, an explosion took place on the deep-water horizon, leading to complete destruction of the rig and more importantly, loss of lives. This paper

There was an undue increase in pressure, which the personnel on the rig falsely described as the bladder effect. Due to this, no rig crew was able to discern the mud movement up the riser till it got too late to react. Different procedures were carried out to try to recover but it all proved abortive.
This event has gone down in history as one of the largest offshore oil spills in history (BP, 2010).
Eye Witness Reports
The eyewitness reports highlight certain comments made by survivors of the incident during and, in some cases, after the disaster.
“Wyman was convinced something was not right. The captain came beck to me saying we can EDS but I said I already did”- Chris Pleasant, Subsea Supervisor, Transocean.
“I told myself, you either get up of you lay here and die. My right leg was hung on something but I pulled it away and came free. Then, I felt something that felt like air. I made it to the hallway and I realized that what I thought was air was actually methane and I could actually feel the droplets. It was moist at the side of my face.” – Miles ‘Randy’ Ezell, Senior Toolpusher, Transocean. (Seconds from
Deepwater horizon oil spill, also known as a BP oil spill. The spill occurred in the Gulf of Mexico. On April 20, 2010 “An oil well in the Gulf of Mexico failed, causing what has been called the worst environmental disaster in U.S. history and taking the
The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill occurred on April 20, 2010 in the Gulf of Mexico. This oil spill was the largest spill in history in front of the Exxon Valdez oil spill of 1989. This oil spill released about 4.9 million barrels of oil into the ocean. This spill not only wreck havoc on the marine life but also the economic players that depended on ocean such as fisherman, tourism, and offshore drilling located along the gulf coast. Along will the spill the oil rig which was named Deepwater Horizon also went up in flames. This proved that the issue went far beyond just an oil rig that blew a line. Since this oil spill had drastic impacts all along the coast, BP which was the most liable for this incident faced criminal charges based on what happened. BP which knew the risks of deep ocean drilling failed to take the necessary safety procedures to reduce the risks of such incident occurring, thus was the reasoning behind placing most of the fault on them and not the other companies. The lack of regulatory oversight led to the issues and cost-cutting procedures opened the rig up to possible malfunctions like the one that occurred. During the spill into the gulf, BP sealed the well with cement which seemed to stop a majority of the oil from escaping the well. BP also recognized that the well was “dead” which was proven wrong when scientists still could conclude was leaking minor amounts of oil into the ocean. This spill not only proved to be harmful to the environment but also
Hedonism is that good is pleasure and bad is pain. Happiness is the highest thing of good. There are some good and some bad things that come out of hedonism. In this case the BP oil spill had both.
On April 20, 2010, 41 miles southeast of the Louisiana Coast, the largest man-made oil spill in U.S. history occurred in the Gulf of Mexico. The offshore oil rig known as Deepwater Horizon, owned by Transocean and under contract with British Petroleum (BP) exploded. The tragedy took the lives of eleven men. The event caused an estimated amount of 4.9 million barrels of oil to be released into the Gulf of Mexico. To honor the brave men and women whose heroism would help save many on board there was a movie
The Deep water Horizon oil spill (also referred to as the BP oil spill) began on 20 April 2010 in the Gulf of Mexico. This unfortunate disaster had a
The rig was built by South Korean company Hyundai Heavy Industries. The rig was drilling a 35,050 feet (10,680 m) deep exploratory well in approximately 5,100 feet (1,600 m) of water. The well is situated in the Macondo Prospect in Mississippi Canyon Block 252 (MC252) of the Gulf of Mexico, whilst also maintained by Halliburton, and Transocean the rig was majority owned and operated by the British Petroleum. On April 20, 2010, high-pressure methane gas from the well expanded into the drilling riser and rose into the drilling rig, where it ignited and exploded, engulfing the platform. At the time, 126 crew members were on board: seven BP employees, 79 of Transocean and employees of various other companies. Eleven workers were presumed dead, never being found. The Deepwater Horizon sank on the morning of 22 April 2010. The efforts to contain the leak at first were unsuccessful due to miscalculations and misinterpretations of what was required. However, on September 19, 2010 the well was permanently sealed when a relief well was dug into the oil deposit and cement was poured into the oil well. The environmental impact, health consequences, economy and ultimately the death of the 11 workers were the consequent issues that arose with the tremendous release of oil into the ocean. These consequent problems were in part due to negligence as well as BP’s failure to fulfill their corporate ethical duties.
The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill was an oil spill that occurred in the Gulf of Mexico was caused by a faulty blowout preventer this is part of the oil rig that was designed by the workers as an emergency shutdown valve. As a result of this anywhere from 1,000 barrels of oil to 5,000 barrels of oil were lost over the course of 100 days. A blowout preventer is a machine on the oil rig for safety to shut down the flow of oil coming out of the well at the bottom of the seafloor. The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill caused a good number of environmental damage as well as killed wildlife and has taken the lives of 11 workers that day. The oil would eventually make it’s way to coastlines (shorelines) of Texas , Florida , Louisiana, Alabama, and Mississippi.
The Gulf oil spill happened on 20-April-2010 was the worst oil spill in U.S history. The BP pipe leak oil and gas on the ocean floor with approximately around 42 miles off the coast of Louisiana. Oil and water can’t mix together since oil density is lighter compare to water therefore oil float on the top of surface water. The oil floated on the surfcace and formed together to become the large oil slicks. These large slicks covered water surface which affect the animal live on surface water such as pelicant or other seabirds. In order to stop the slicks from damaging the coastal ecosystems and species, the engineer used dispersant chemical. However, the dispersant compound somewhat had effect on the life of species in the contaminated area especially the bottom floor. To understand what happened to the life of species on the bottom floor, a group of research lead by Helen K.White was conducting the investigation the deep sea-coral communities in the Gulf within 15 miles from wellhead as
April 20th, 2010 an explosion occurred that created what would be considered one of the worst oil spills in U.S. history. The Deepwater Horizon Oil Rig was being leased by BP Oil Company and was located only about 40 miles off of the coast of Louisiana. A surge of natural gas that made its way to the Horizon rig’s platform ignited, causing the rig to capsize and sink, thus breaking risers that were being used to counteract the large amount of pressure from oil and natural gasses (Pallardy, 2015). The explosion killed 11 workers and injured 17 others and caused a massive leak in the oil wellhead. It took 87 days for the wellhead to be closed and it is estimated that over that time around 210 million gallons
The BP Oil Spill began on April 20, 2010 in the Gulf of Mexico after the BP leased, Transocean owned, Deepwater Horizon drilling rig exploded, killing 11 and injuring 17 of the 126 crew members. The explosion also sank the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig triggering a massive oil spill that would last for 87 days and leak 4.9 billion barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico. After the explosion, BP and the federal government enlisted the best minds in the country and worked tirelessly to come up with a solution to stop the leaks, but failed several times due to the extreme depth, pressure and technical complexity of using remotely operated vehicles (ROV). The final resolution of the leak was achieved on July 15, 2010, when a sealing cap was installed over top of the well. Although the stoppage of the leak took just under two months, the clean-up efforts continued for much longer as containment booms, chemical dispersants, skimming vessels and controlled burns were used to mitigate the environmental damage. The event was classified as the largest accidental marine oil spill in the world and the largest environmental disaster in United States history.
The Bp spill in the Gulf of Mexico is considered to be one of the biggest oil spill disasters. The Bp oil spill affect many people and the environment. The oil spill was an oil disaster and globally financial disaster, and it had a negative impact on the sea and the oceans around it. the oil spread everywhere, and it affected every living animals that came in contact with it. However, many tries were made to try to stop the leak, but all failed until the leak was declared officially closed by the us government. According to the “BP and the Deepwater Horizon Disaster of 2010” states that “the Deepwater Horizon, 17 were injured, including Williams, and 11 were killed. The rig burned for 36 hours, combusting the 700,000 gallons of oil that were
On April 20, 2010, BP’s oil drilling rig caught fire and sank in the Gulf of Mexico. Throughout the following months, the company attempted to keep everyone from stockholders to environmental activists updated with their cleanup efforts. The mass amounts of oil that spilled into the Gulf took many years to cleanup. Most of BP’s updates came from press releases, along with speaking to reporters about their cleanup efforts. The idea of writing press releases for a company allows the public to stay updated with what is going on, but can backfire in the future if the business does not keep it’s word on what they say they will do in the release of the information to the public.
The BP Oil Spill An Introductory Background - One of the most controversial ecological disasters in recent history focused on multinational British Petroleum and their Gulf of Mexico Operations. The Deepwater Oil Disaster began on April 20, 2010 with an explosion on the Deepwater Horizon Oil platform, killing 11, injuring 17. It was not until July 15th, however, that the leak was stopped by capping the wellhead, after releasing almost 5 million barrels (206 million gallons) of crude oil, or 53,000 barrels per day into the Gulf of Mexico. It was not until September 19th that the relief well process was complete and the U.S. Government, EPA, and Coast Guard agencies declared the well breach effectively stopped (Cavnar, 2010).
On April 20, the explosion on the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig in the Gulf of Mexico led to the largest accidental release of oil into marine waters in history. As a result, a huge loss of money and life was caused and affected serious environmental damage to wild animals and water pollution. BP was accused of their irresponsibility that it took 87 days before the well was closed and sealed. BP’s shares
Deepwater Horizon oil Spill: BP’s drilling platform in the Gulf of Mexico had an explosion in April 2010, causing the “largest oil spill catastrophe in the petroleum industry history”. It caused the death of 11 men and injury to several others. “More than 150,000 barrels of crude oil gushed into the sea, every day, for almost 5 months and up to 68,000 square miles of the Gulf 's surface were covered” (1).
