Bernie Sanders once said “Finally, let [us] understand that when we stand together, we will always win. When men and women stand together for justice, we win. When black, white and Hispanic people stand together for justice, we win.” Bernie Sanders started as a young activist fighting to desegregate and end the Vietnam war, As he got older he dwelled into politics and became a self identified socialist; he competed against corporate backing and a corrupt political system yet remained true to his beliefs of Universal Health Care System, affordable education, better social security and welfare, the right for a woman to choose what she wants for her body, cares for the environment, but most importantly, Bernie Sanders believes in America.

One of his greatest challenges as Mayor of Burlington was the Lake Champlain waterfront; he faced against Tony Pomerleau, a developer backed by corporations who wanted to build apartment complexes, office buildings, and hotels. Bernie Sanders campaigned against this with the slogan “Burlington is not for sale” and created a plan to revitalize the waterfront. Sanders succeeded and created a lively waterfront that brought the community together with public beaches and parks, a boathouse, community gardens, and campsites; this area is now home to many events and conservation efforts and is a tourist destination to visiting Vermont. In 1987, Bernie Sanders was voted as one of the best mayors in America by the U.S. News & World Report. Bernie Sanders success in politics did not end there as he became the first socialist member of the House of Representatives and the first independent member of the House of Representatives in 40 years. He was often ostracized and misunderstood during this period as he did not belong to one party.
