Over the last few years, education has become more of a priority and crime has become more of an issue. Kids are dropping out of school and more people are going to jail each and every day. Our country needs a president that makes sure these topics are taken care of effectively. That person is Bernie Sanders. Bernie Sanders should be the next president of the United States of America. Bernie Sanders has been involved in politics for much of his lifetime. In the year of 1981, he was elected to be the mayor of Burlington, Vermont, and was reelected in the next three consecutive elections. Sanders became a United States senator in 2006. The United States spends nearly $51 billion annually on the war on drugs, according to the Drug Policy Alliance (Who is Bernie Sanders?). America spends $80 billion yearly incarcerating citizens (Bernie Sanders on Crime). A criminal can get away with a murder or have a reduced sentence, while a person that simply sells marijuana can get a 20 year sentence in prison. Because of these ridiculous rates and sentences, Bernie Sanders plans to reform the unfair criminal justice system. He says, “I am running for president because when youth unemployment and underemployment is at 30, 40, 50 percent, 51 percent for African American kids, we need to invest in jobs and education, not more jails and incarceration” (Bernie Sanders: ‘We need major reforms in a very broken criminal justice system’). Germany, Finland, and Norway all offer free education for students and still maintain a stable economy. Alexandra Flores Quilty, vice president of the United States Students Association, says, “Education is the foundation of any country, and if we want to see the country thrive, then everyone must be able to have access to an education” (Bernie Sanders Issues Bill to Make 4 Year College Free). It is a shame that some kids who could be incredibly intelligent and genuine can’t get into college just because he or she can’t afford it. Many jobs nowadays require education beyond high school. Those jobs will not be fulfilled if costs for college keep increasing. Reducing the cost of college will also increase the incentive for doing well in high school. Kids in poor families assume they won’t be able to get accepted into college, so they just give up in high school, resulting in bad grades and a lower income when they are matured. Wanting to learn more facts and information about various things shouldn’t have to cost thousands of dollars per semester. More money should be spent on the people that want to go far in life rather than criminals who cause trouble constantly.
