This topic has been debated for many years and is still being debated. The debate dates back to the 1980s and now athletes are demanding that they deserve to be paid since profits are made off of them. Some athletes such as former and current basketball and football players came together with lawsuits to federal courts asking for rewards from profits NCAA makes gets of them. College sports are one of the largest and fastest growing markets in today’s culture. With some college sports games attracting more viewers than their professional counterparts, the NCAA is one of the most profiting organizations in America. Recently there has been controversy in the world of college sports as to whether the college athletes that are making their universities and the NCAA money should receive payment while they are playing their respective sport. Many believe that these athletes should be paid. Others argue that they are already receiving numerous benefits for playing that sport from their universities. Many of the proponents of paying college athletes are current or former college athletes who believe their hard work and hours put into practice and competing go under appreciated. They feel that while the athletes are making the university money, the athletes do not receive any cut of these profits. Opponents feel that athletes already receive numerous perks and should not receive extra compensation on top of the perks they already receive.

Ever since college students started playing sports, back in 1879 when Harvard played Yale in the first collegiate sports game, the question of whether college athletes should be paid was addressed. From that point on athletes, coaches, and college administrators have brought forward points agreeing or disagreeing with the notion of paying college students. The students argue that they deserve to be paid due to the revenue that they bring for the college and because of the games they play and the championships they win. At first the idea of paying college athletes was out of the question, but now the argument has gone from a simple yes or no to a heated debate. Since college athletes are given a free education, they should not also be paid.

The question of whether or not college athletes should get paid is of heated debate in todays times. While many believe that student athletes are entitled to income, It remains undougtibly a concern of moral interest to universities across the country. This paper is going to explain the pros and cons that come with allowing student athletes the right to receive a salary.

Due to National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) rules and regulations no college athlete is able to receive any compensation or endorsement while participating in college athletics. These rules have long been challenged, however no changes have been made by the NCAA. With universities grossing close to $200 million a year college athletics has turned into one of the top industries in the world. The NCAA is a governing body of college athletics, but without people questioning the NCAA and demanding changes to the monopoly that the NCAA is nothing will happen to the unfairness to college athletes like it is currently.

College athletes generate millions of dollars for their schools each year, yet they are not allowed to be compensated beyond a scholarship due to being considered amateurs. College athletes are some of the hardest working people in the nation, having to focus on both school courses and sports. Because athletics take so much time, these student-athletes are always busy. College football and basketball are multi-billion dollar businesses. The NCAA does not want to pay the athletes beyond scholarships, and it would be tough to work a new compensation program into the NCAA and university budgets. College athletes should be compensated in some form because they put in so much time and effort, generating huge amounts of revenue.

One of the most controversial subjects we as individuals hear about this day in age is whether or not college athletes deserve to be paid. Many people argue that these athletes do intact, deserve to be paid for their time and hard work. NCAA athletes create a name for themselves by playing and performing well on their college teams. The better these athletes perform, the more publicity the school revives. This then leads to higher ticket sales and stores around campus selling jerseys and other clothing items with athletes names and numbers on the back. NCAA schools have become comfortable with using athletes’ names to bring in a revenue for the school, and yet the athletes never see any of that money. On the other hand, many people believe that these athletes do not deserve, nor should they expect to receive payment in return. They believe that these scholarships and the education are payment in itself. Some even bring up the question on if it is affordable or even realistic to pay college athletes.

There have been ongoing arguments over the past decade of whether or not college athletes should be paid to play. Many argue that they do not have time to get real jobs because the requirements for the sport that they participate in are far too demanding. Others cite that these athletes are provided full scholarships to attend the schools at which they are playing the sport. However regardless of the argument, I still feel that college athletes should NOT be paid to play.

Many people believe that college athletes should be paid for how much revenue they bring to their school. However, there are also people who think they should not get paid because they already have numerous advantages that other students do not have. Student-athletes at the Division 1 level that play men's basketball and football should not necessarily be paid a salary but should be able to make money off of their accomplishments, especially if we hold them on a high pedestal as we do now.

Why is there a debate regarding this topic? It should be a simple decision. There are 460,000 collegiate athletes and only 2% of them go on to be pros and make millions of dollars. Come on man, universities have to start paying their athletes so that they can start saving up for their long life ahead of them. Collegiate athletes should earn a salary because they work 40 hours or more just on their sport. Athletics generate most of the revenue for universities. The NCAA is approaching 1 billion dollars in revenue. The NCAA has plenty of money to pay their athletes. Granted, the opposing view says that college athletes don’t need that extra money. College athletes already live a luxury life because they have extra money from their scholarship and are going out to restaurants, while regular students eat ramen noodles every night in their dorm.

Paying college athletes would be beneficial for the athletes and the programs..The NCAA membership has adopted amateurism rules to ensure the students’ priority are to obtain a quality educational experience and that all of student-athletes are competing equitably.The NCAA made these rules a long time ago to make sure that college athletes didn’t feel like playing sports in college was their job and tried to emphasize that education came before sports.They want to make these rules and restrictions more strict because they feel that athletes are starting to do their own thing. Both Dave Zirin in "The Shame of the NCAA" and Tim Ajmani in "Compensation for College Athletes" would agree that student athletes are being taken advantage of. In Zirin's piece, he speaks about how this treatment towards these students is a civil rights issue. These students are being overworked on the field, some may consider playing a sport in college is more than a full-time job, and aren't getting form of payment or protection. These corporations and universities are “enriching themselves on the backs of uncompensated young men whose status… deprives them of the right to due process guaranteed by the Constitution"(Zirin 204), the NCAA justifies its purpose with two principals, amateurism and student athletes. Since these athletes are students and playing amateur games, they don’t have to be compensated. The NCAA also justifies the fact that students don’t get paid by giving them free room and board but Ajmani makes a point that paying students would provide more of a motive for them to stay in school and complete their degree.
