I chose the recorded lecture titled Psychoeducation with Families Dealing with Schizophrenia because I work at a psychiatric hospital, and a majority of our patients suffer from some form of schizophrenia. I am really glad I chose this lecture because I was able to learn a great deal as far as psychoeducation goes. For instance, I really like how Carol Anderson described family psychoeducation as a research-based model that provides information to families about the illness and how to manage it. However, Carol also explained it as the exchange of information, done slowly and carefully with the family relationship being the focus of the intervention, not just the mental illness. However, our patient’s ecosystem is typically filled with hostile relationships including families that no longer want anything to do with them. Our patients typically came in from the streets and have been in and out of the hospital for years, which made me think if we had implemented this structural approach to treating mental illness years ago some of these patients could have prevented relapse. With that being said, the first thing I will do in my practice is looking at our psychoeducational groups we offer at the hospital and see if they are actually psychoeducational groups or just information groups. I will try and do a better job at connecting our patients with families and friends because a good support network and system greatly reduces the recidivisms rate and reduces the onset of relapsing. Finally, I will begin to advocate for more vocational groups for our patients. However, due to recent events at the hospital, we have cut most of our vocational work groups off hospital grounds. I can see why they were cut, but I feel that we are punishing patients and if these patients are awaiting a placement then why not trust them to work off of hospital
The goal of Bowen’ theory is to review developmental patterns within the familial system and the stress centered around the anxiety caused by closeness or the lack thereof (Penny, 1999). Bowen’s theory works to facilitate a decline in stress and anxiety by enabling the clients with education as to how the emotional system works and focusing on how to modify self perceptional behaviors instead of working to change others within the system (Penny, 1999).

Structural family therapy features emphasis is mostly on structural change as the main goal of therapy; it pays close attention to the individual but also acknowledges the importance of family in the healing process of the individual.
In the United States the Mental Health Care field is one of the most underserved areas of healthcare. The mental healthcare field faces many challenges to the proper treatment of patients from both a societal and professional standpoint. From a societal perspective a negative stereotype is associated with patients seeking psychiatric care. Patients seeking care are often labeled as defective or damaged. Add in the complication that most patients with mental illness appear to be normal, accepting that someone is ill without outward symptoms can also be difficult for a society to understand. From a professional perspective the challenges within the mental health care industry include personal prejudice, staffing issues, and problems with coordinating care. The combination of these factors has a direct negative impact on the willingness of individuals suffering from mental illness in seeking the care needed to treat the symptoms of mental illness.
In considering that a group on aging is centered on a particular theme, a psychoeducational group would be most appropriate. Corey (2010) suggests that the elderly may benefit from a psychoeducational structure as groups of this nature not only provide the opportunity to connect with members within the group, but teach members the skills they need to learn how to foster relationships and support systems beyond the group. Many older individuals, especially those within nursing or retirement homes, face isolation and loneliness as they have been removed from their friends and family primarily due to health reasons. Friends and family may visit often, but being separated from one’s home, community, and family unit, which can take a toll on an individual’s mental and emotional well being. Attending a psychoeducational group on successful aging might provide people a way to connect with their peers, while providing tools and coping skills to achieve a sense of meaning outside of the group.

When mental illness first strikes, family members may deny the person has a continuing illness. During the acute episode family members will be alarmed by what is happening to their loved one. When the episode is over and the family member returns home, everyone will feel a tremendous sense of relief. All involved want to put this painful time in the past and focus on the future. My experience in mental health clinical was very different from any other clinical I had before. In a mental health clinical setting, I am not only treating client’s mental illnesses, I am also treating their medical problems such as COPD, diabetes, chronic renal failure, etc. Therefore, it is important to prepare for the unexpected events. In this mental health clinical, I learned that the importance of checking on my clients and making sure that they are doing fine by performing a quick head-to toes assessment at the beginning of my shift. I had also learned that client’s mental health illness had a huge impact on their current medical illness.

Intrinsic motivation can be defined as “motivation associated with activities that are their own reward” (Perry 2003). It is motivation that stems from your inner feelings and views which feed your desires to accomplish and perform.
