Gender equality, a thing that we’ve heard and talk about it a million times but it's still an issue all over the world. Author, Charlotte Perkins Gilman once said, “The labor of women in the house, certainly, enables men to produce more wealth than they otherwise could.” The economic and society structure we have is based on women oppression which still happening in now a day, such as women is earning way lesser than men even they’ve done the same job or work; women hold a really low percentage in the government compared to men; that’s why women is struggled for the gender equality a long time not because of the female population, but the oppression and restriction placed on women is too effective. In the story, Gilman shows the typical husband and wife unfair relationship in that time, the narrator’s husband John, is portrayed as a male chauvinist who control his wife with the “rest cure” treatment which he limited the narrator’s in the house to try to cure her. During the story, John always tries to control what the narrator should do and doesn’t get the narrator’s desires met, such as John doesn’t let the narrator pick the room she want and doesn’t like her do any writing. That is why John wants the narrator always to stay at home and have the “rest cure” treatment, and those are the “outside pattern” which restricting the narrator in the story. Ironically, the “rest cure” treatment didn’t cure the narrator at the end of the story, but it “killed” her mentally. The first-person point of view is used primarily in this story and it allows the reader to experience and understand how does it feel to live in a male-dominated society as a woman. Gilman used this technique to explain the problems about gender roles that happened in that period, which women needs to be a wife and mother and follow the rules told by their man, in the other word, women must live in the inner sphere of the family.
