Hurricane Ivan was a major mile marker and an extremely devastating period of time for most people located within the Caribbean as well as the lower areas of the United States. Within hours of forming, Ivan was showing signs of having the ability to grow larger and have the most impact than any other hurricane within the past two years. When everything was said and done, Ivan was classified as, “The cyclone was the ninth named storm, the sixth hurricane and the fourth major hurricane of the active 2004 Atlantic hurricane season” (Wikipedia Contributors). After assessing the size, velocity, and damage of the tropical storm, Ivan was seen as a category five hurricane as well as making it into the tenth spot of the all time worst hurricanes within the Atlantic Ocean. Not only that, but it was named the costliest hurricane that has ever blown through the Atlantic. On August 31, 2004 hurricane Ivan began its destructive journey. Weather specialists explained repeatedly how strong and unpredictable the storm was and that there would be a great amount of casualties if people did not evacuate. New Orleans was a major area of encouraged evacuation due to its below sea level elevation. The Mayor explained to residents how getting to the highest possible ground would be the best option if they were not able to evacuate the city. “If people can't get out of New Orleans, the mayor said, they should do a vertical evacuation. Basically, go to hotels and high-rise buildings in the city” (CNN's David Mattingly). Unfortunately, less than 45% of people evacuated throughout all regions impacted by the hurricane. Surprisingly, hurricane Ivan wasn’t as deadly as anticipated nor was it named a deadly hurricane or storm. In total there were 92 direct deaths and 32
