For my out of the box experiment I chose to do three days without some accustomed technology, by some accustomed technology I mean my laptop, netflix, youtube and pinterest. Why I chose to do this is because we live in a time where we are highly dependent on technology, some of us more heavily than others. However it may be we all use some sort of technology everyday, so I wanted to see what would happen if I didn’t use it for a couple of days. This is really out of the box for me because I usually wake up and immediately check my phone, check if there are any new videos I haven’t seen either on Netflix of Youtube and spend most of my morning glued to my laptop. When I am out and about, I usually scroll through pinterest to see what pops …show more content…
That day I realized that I had so much more time to do things, after helping my mom clean the kitchen and living room. I had nothing else to do, so I went to my room and I was super bored I had no idea what to do with all the time. I would just go on my phone scroll through images and essentially do nothing. That day I realized that I spend a lot of time just going up and down the stairs trying to find something that I could do. At night I found it to be difficult for me to go to sleep because I had nothing to watch on my phone that would eventually make me sleepy. So I just layed there for an hour or so staring at the ceiling. The next day was better because I didn’t spend a lot of time at home, that morning I woke up pretty late. So I just grabbed something to eat and went to class, after class I went to walmart. I ended getting home until six, when I got home I ate, did some of the readings, and went over my notes. The difficult part about Monday was again going to sleep, it wasn’t as easy when I wasn’t able to use my laptop. Tuesday was a little more boring because after getting home from school, I didn’t do anything I was just walking around the house finding random things that popped into my head. Before starting this experiment I expected it to be super easy to live three days without this accustomed technology. This is because I do not consider myself someone who heavily relies on technology, or someone
My parents hired painters to paint the walls grey to match the pink and grey theme I had going on in the room. My dad bought me a grey bookcase to match the theme of my room because he knew how much I loved reading. I did not ask for a new bookcase, but he said it was a “moving in” gift. The bookcase was quite larger than my old one, with 5 horizontal shelves to store all my books. My room was on the smaller side, but it made me very cozy. As I lit a Lake Sunset candle in my room, I started to unpack some of my boxes. First came all my movie collections that I put under the tv stand, then all my makeup, then my books. As I started to put the books away, ‘The Berenstain Bears' Moving Day’ fell off the stand and to the ground. As I picked up the book, page 12 was open. The page read, “I hated the process of moving. But after the first day of school, everything was fine. I am happy we moved because I have meet new people and have had made new memories.” My mind started to clear up. My mom used to read this book to me every night before I went to bed. I would never have known that this would relate so much to my life now. I started school yesterday and I have already met so many cool people. Everyone was so welcoming and this girl named Rachel even let me sit at her lunch table. I think I was overreacting over the whole situation because it hasn’t been so bad. I am excited for the
Stewart explained that kids who can recognize their regret for being on electronics have the ability to regain their lost skills, such as time management and denial. Dr. Stewart dismissed that technology was not addictive: “Technology is a drug... it makes you feel as if you lost your sense of things.” As adolescents mature, they become less active in their family if they are influenced by technology, whereas if not influenced by technology they would be more active in family affairs. She notes my “personal” experience and maturation with electronics; because of my “rural upcoming” and “care for nature” electronics have less of an impact on myself. “Electronics were just another hobby” that one of her kids had. This hobby of building computers for peers, fixing electronics around the house, advising strangers how to troubleshoot and fix their problem accordingly, even finding expertise in becoming anonymous across the internet has affected siblings, parents, friends, and strangers. Nevertheless, there are severe downfalls to this hobby. Just as professional sports players spend the majority of their time training and playing, I experiment with various electronic devices and research them. If one considers a passion for any activity healthy then my passion should subsequently be considered healthy. Any one event while using electronics i.e. a laptop, can set one up for aliment, as it modifies how they interact and socialize with others. It also shows how they would
I spend three days without any personal internet, TV, phone, musics. It was difficult to start to unplug day because I can imagine that how uncomfortable without any of these. I usually check my phone once a hours: look at the clock, and check messages, email, news, listen to music, and watch TV. I carry my phone on my hand all the time, and put it on my desk in the class. For three days, I didn’t use phone and personal internet. It was difficult at the first day and I got used to it at the third day.
I got to my apartment and had a huge headache. I shouldn’t have drank that much well off to sleep for me. I did my homework at the library earlier so I don’t need to do that. This is the one week I do it anyway. I yawn once more and climb into my dark bed sheets.I snuggle underneath and drift off to sleep. If only I knew someone was watching me the whole day. I woke up the next day, showered, and brushed my hair for the weekend. I love weekends, no school and no worries. I closed the curtains of my bay window so the whole room would be dark and went down stairs to the burning smell of pancakes. Uck… I hate pancakes.
In the article, Attached to Technology and Paying a Price by Matt Ritchel, Kord Campbell’s family is an example of a family who is addicted to their devices. In the afternoon, the squad all completes in a video game showdown. They all sit around the TV, playing a video game on their Wii. Their youngest daughter has an ipod touch, and all she does is use it. She also has a laptop. Researchers worry that “digital stimulation like this creates attention problems for children with brains that are still developing.” When we start to use the device over and over, it becomes a routine. Not only is it a routine, it could be considered to be a habit to keep checking things over and over again. For example, somebody who relies on their emails for their job checks their email constantly. This could be up to 50-100 times a day, something clearly too much and to distracting from the outside
One beautiful Monday morning, everything was calm (for now). I woke up very fresh, excited, and ready to go to school! It was a nice and sunny day, the best way to start a week. I woke up at 6:00 a.m and had a lot of time to get ready for the school day. After that I wore my clothes, did my hair, and brushed My teeth. Next, I had breakfast that included cereal, milk, and apple juice. My sister and I went outside and saw that my dad was waiting for us to get in the car, so that he can take us to school.
Electronic devices are consuming the lives of everyday people. Everywhere you look someone will be locked in staring at their phone screen, unaware of what’s happening around him or her. Electronic devices have become a daily necessity for people. Electronic devices are a controversial topic today. While some believe that electronic devices are harmful, others believe these devices benefit society. In, “A Thing Like Me,” Nicholas Carr brings up the extent on which humans depend on devices. The dependence on electronic devices has consequences. The consequences that come from electronic devices are in takes away from face to face communication, the devices cause distractions when driving which can lead to serious injuries or even death. Electronic devices also have changed the way of learning, people no longer feel the need to learn when typing a question into Google gives people the answer. Electronic devices are a part of society and can cause negative impacts in peoples lives everyday. People do not realize the consequences that electronic devices bring into their
What is technology to you? For some people, it's a lifeline they can't go without it. If you were a gamer, how would you feel about not being able to play for a whole week? What about music junkies? Not being able to match a song to each of your feelings for a whole 168 hours. Possibilities are endless but participating in “Shut Down Your Screen Week” is not one of them. For instance, being plugged into social media allows you to look over and receive news, and look at the diversity of the world. Also, the internet contains so many astonishing materials. Although, screens provide us with many convenient things it is also addicting.
On Saturday I woke up around 7:00 I lay in bed and read for a little bit and then I got up and started my chores. (My dad went to work while I was doing my chores) When I had two to go we had breakfast (biscuits) and watched a doctor who. Then I finished my chores and packed to go to my grandma’s house for a sleepover. After I had finished packing I started coloring with my mom and my brother. Then my grandma came and we put away our colors and then we packed the car and headed to the grocery store to drop my mom off so she could get groceries. We had to go with her so we did and I pushed the cart while my grandma went and did something. Then my grandma came and we dropped my mom off back at our house and went with our grandma for a sleepover. First we had lunch there then my brother and I had to pick up the sticks if we wanted a popsicle. When we finished we got the popsicle and played until bedtime which was at 9:30. I stayed awake reading until I finally fell asleep. It was a big day.
The types of technology I interact with throughout a typical day are: my phone, laptop, and TV. I use my phone at the start of the day (as an alarm clock), and then throughout the rest of the day I use it to communicate (text/call) with friends/family. Basically, my phone stays with my 24hours of the day. I use my laptop as much as I use my phone. Typically, I am on my laptop 70% of the day. This includes browsing the Internet, listening to music, and using word/ other applications to complete homework. I would say that the TV is only used for a short period of time, only to watch the news, or a show.
Over the two-day period I was busy. I had gone back home over the weekend to see my family. I left Saturday morning and came back Sunday evening. I had a relaxing day on Saturday but did my work Sunday. I started off with doing my English paper and then I had to help my dad move cars from one spot to his shop. The whole day until six I was working on my English paper. I had written a rough draft but on Sunday I wanted to make it even better so I re-did it. When I came back to my dorm I organized and cleaned my room. I wanted it to look clean so I can work in there and so it can look nice for the week. After that I did some of my other homework and then did the English paper again. Neat two o’clock in the morning I planned everything out for
It is November 4th, one of the longest days of my life it seemed. I woke up that morning to get ready for school, and I told myself, “One more day. Just get through today and your patience will have paid off. The best things are worth waiting for.” Though I told myself that, it was very much easier said than done. That day felt like it never ended, each class seemed to drag on for hours, and the bus ride turned from an hour and twenty minutes to a whole day. When I finally got home, I ran into the house and kicked my shoes off so fast while still running they flew across the room and hit the far wall I was so excited. My mind was running at a million miles an hour, gathering my gear, retrieving my clothes from the scent free laundry
It contained experiments performed by credible scientists of this field and scholarly quotes from experts within the realm of this extent. Its main focus is to portray that technology is becoming an addiction that is rapidly spreading throughout the entire world, causing us to become impatient and forgetful. One of the investigations was an experiment with a college student who couldn’t use any technology for one day, and she reported feeling very lonely and secluded from her life. She said “Although I go to a school with thousands of students, the fact that I was not able to communicate with anyone via technology was almost unbearable.” This goes to show how much of a toll technology has taken in our lives. People can barely survive without the comfort and luxury and technology in life. Nicki Dowling, a clinical psychologist who led a study on technology dependence, prefers calling it “Internet dependence”
It was the beginning of what was looking to be a long week. It was supposed to be outrageously cold, I had a full weekend of work to look forward too, and I had a big paper due in my Comp II class. Now, this paper was different because instead of being in our Comp II class all week like we were accustomed too, we would be on our own in the library while we individually went to speak with our teacher about how we were doing. During first semester, I had really liked the week on our own, but this week was going to throw a curve on me that I didn’t expect.
In this paper, I will be examining the results of an experiment where I disconnect from the Internet for 24 hours. While disconnected, I will not be allowed any access to search engines, browsers, or applications that require Internet. The only possible source of telecommunication would be through text and call without Internet. The last time where I remember living a day without Internet for 24 hours was before I owned my first ever laptop, which was back in 2007. Ever since then, my Internet usage and reliance only increased exponentially. Since I am one of the followers of the modern social construct, I would be suffering from the constant anxiousness due to the fear of missing out and the ongoing withdrawal from my habitual none-stop
