Introduction
In the Civil War, there were many battles and key points that helped in the victory of the Union. The Battle of Port Royal was the second battle of the Civil War. “The Battle of Port Royal culminated an amphibious operation designed to establish a United States military depot on the southeastern coast to carry out land and sea operations against the Confederacy” (Wise 2016). This battle gave the Union its first victory. In November 1861 the Union attacked the Confederate at Port Royal, South Carolina. This battle lasted for four days from November Third, 1861 to November Seventh, 1861. This battle had the Union fighting the Confederate for control over the port. The Union took control and shut down the port. This Union victory shut down a place of resources for the Confederate.
Background Information
“Three days after the fall of Fort Sumter in April of 1861, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a blockade of all Southern ports” (“The story of the Battle of Port Royal” 2012).After the fall of Fort Sumter, there was a new order for the ports to be closed. The South refused this order. Because of this refusal, the Union wanted to punish the South. The North had a plan to form a blockade of the Southern ports. In order to continue with

This battle was a key point in the Civil War. Without this battle, the North would never have won the war. This battle helped the North in defeating the South. This battle is a serious battle that is needed in the history of the United States of America. This battle helped to keep the states together and keep one part of the nation under control. If this battle never took place then where America is now would be split into two different countries and would still have slaves. This battle was a necessary battle in the Civil War. It allowed the North to have a key position on Charleston and South Carolina in general. The battle gave the Union a step-up in the
Did you know that ten roads led into Gettysburg? Which is the main reason that the battle was fought there. ("Battle of Gettysburg Facts." Battle of Gettysburg Facts. N.p., n.d. Web. 12 Dec. 2016.) The Battle of Gettysburg was a significant battle in the Civil War. On July 3rd, 1863 in Gettysburg Pennsylvania, the Battle of Gettysburg began. The battle was between the Confederacy and the Union, they were fighting North against South. The South left the states because they felt that the government was too powerful and that the states didn't have enough power. The Battle of Gettysburg was a turning point in the war because of the geography, casualties, and the Gettysburg Address.
After fighting their way southward from Illinois and northward from Gulf of Mexico. Until by late summer of 1862, only Vicksburg and Port Hudson appeared to be major constraints to the Union of the two posts, Vicksburg was by far the strongest and most important. Setting high over looking a bend in the river, protected by artillery and dangerous swamps. So far the city had defined Union efforts to force into submission. (Williams 1)
Until the 12th of April, 1861, the United States had never seen a war as big as the Civil War. The country, that, during the Revolutionary War, was small and united; now, was deeply divided by a (somewhat) imaginary line. This separated the Union into two independent countries: the Confederate States of America, also called the South or Confederacy, was pro slavery; and the United States of America, also called the North or Union, was against slavery. This division was long awaited. As someone who was against slavery on moral grounds, the election of Abraham Lincoln caused the secession of the following slave states in the Deep South: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina and Texas. After the Battle of Fort Sumter,
The battle of Antietam was the most important battle in the Civil War because of many various reasons. There were three reasons why the battle of Antietam was important. The reasons were because of the Emancipation Proclamation; it was turning point for North, and it strengthened the North.
The significance of the Battle of Gettysburg was the fact General Lee stepped and failed to invade the Northern theatre in a move designed to take pressure off of Virginia and possibly earn a victory that could win the Civil War. The failure of this strategy meant the South had lost the battle. The kids was demoralizing, Confederates would never again attempt to
From a small town that held roughly 2,000 people to a bloodbath war zone, Gettysburg became a very well known battle from the Civil War. There is many contributing factors that made this battle a turning point in the war such as it being the northernmost attack that could of ended the Unions will to continue the war if it was won by Lee. Another reason it was a turning point was because the casualties that the South suffered from resulting in such a large setback. Along with this it also gave the nation an opportunity to banish slavery for good, preserve the union, and to prove to future generations that anything is possible if you rule under a democracy which is discussed in a speech brought from President Abraham Lincoln. The Battle of Gettysburg was the northernmost attack brought from the Confederates.
This can be seen in the Major Battles of the Civil War map. The map shows all of the battles that took place during the civil war. The map also shows big line all around the confederate states in the water, named Union blockade of Ports. This line is showing where they had ships positioned so no resources could get in or out of the south. (Document 2). This document shows that the Union had a plan for this war that was more strategic than just fighting to the death. This plan was called the anaconda plan, and it was a plan to squeeze the confederate states out of resources. This line of Union blockade were on water, and land. During the war, the Union blockade became smaller and smaller, containing all of the confederacy to a smaller area. This is one way that helped the Union win the war in the end. Another example of the Union having better strategies than the Confederacy is Sherman’s Scorched Earth Campaign. “Plantations were burned, crops destroyed and stores of food pillaged. In the wake of his progress to the sea he left numerous "Sherman sentinels" (the chimneys of burnt out houses) and "Sherman neckties" (railroad rails that had been heated and wrapped around trees.). Along the way, his army was joined by thousands of former slaves who brought up the rear of the march because they had no other place to go.” (Document 7). This part of the text explains how Sherman’s Scorched Earth campaign was meant to scare the confederacy into
The Battle of Gettysburg is defined as the turning point in the Civil War and possibly the turning point of American history. After three days of battle in the heat of July, The union army came out victorious. This battle would ultimately lead the Union to win the war. Because of this battle, many Confederate soldiers were killed and the Confederate Army was dying down to its last units of men. Because of this battle, the Confederates didn’t dare to invade the North again and led to a decrease of incentive in the South. Because of this battle, Abraham Lincoln gives the famous Gettysburg Address to rally the Union troops and keep them motivated to keep fighting and win the war. The Battle of Gettysburg is a historic event that will be remembered
Cannonballs flew left and right and bullets soared through the air in the deadliest and most important battle of the Civil War, the Battle of Antietam. The Battle of Antietam was the single bloodiest day in the Civil War, but it was a very important turning point in the Civil War. The Civil War changed America., and America would have been a completely different place if it weren’t for the one most important battle in the Civil War, The Battle of Antietam. The Battle of Antietam gave the Union a moral victory which resulted in Abraham Lincoln issuing the Emancipation Proclamation, allowing slaves to be freed and the union to win the war.
The Fall of Port Royal happened on November 3-7, 1861, in Port Royal Sound, South Carolina. The Union and Confederates fought each other because President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a blockade of all Southern ports. This battle was very hard for confederates to defend its coastline. Samuel F. Du Pont was the leader for the Union Army and the leader for the Confederate Army was Thomas F. Drayton. There was 12,600 union soldiers and 3,000 Confederate Soldiers who fought.. Ninety-four soldiers have died in this battle. In the end it was a Union
The battle of Gettysburg was a very big turning point for the Civil War. The south was winning the Civil War so far until the battle of Gettysburg. The battle of Gettysburg was one of the most bloodiest battles in the civil war it lasted for 3 days. Once the battle of Gettysburg was over the North won the battle and started winning the Civil War. Gettysburg was a turning point in the Civil War because the south loses momentum and it proves Lee can be beat.
The Naval Battle of Port Royal was fought on November 3rd-7th 1861. Port Royal was a Confederate city on the South Carolina coast. It was defended by 2 forts at the entrance to its harbor named Fort Walker and Fort Beauregard. On November 3rd the attack under Union naval officer Du Pont led a navy attack of 14 warships, 26 supply ships, 25 transports for 12,000 troops, and the flagship The Wabash. The Confederates also had some small ships to defend the harbor including a converted tugboat which each had about 2 to 3 guns each. The Union engaged the confederate ships and easily defeated them. The warships bombarded the two forts until Du Pont received word that Fort Walker had been abandoned. Shortly after Fort Beauregard was abandoned and the
On September 17, 1862 a victory from the Union General, George B. McClellan, has turned the tables for the Civil War. At the Battle of Antietam many soldiers from both the Confederates and the Union had lost many. Lots of people think it was the bloodiest battle that was ever fought during the Civil War. This battle happened because as Robert E. Lee was making his way through to north he was confronted by the Union Army at Sharpsburg, Maryland. Throughout the day of September 17 three assaults by the Union Army and the loss of many soldiers had led the battle to end in a draw. However, the Confederate Army retreated giving the Union Army the victory. This battle was very important because it was the victory that President Lincoln needed before
The Union Blockade was in the civil war, it was a naval strategy by the United States to prevent the Confederacy from trading. The blockade was announced by president Abraham Lincoln in 1861. The Union commissioned 500 ships, which can destroy or capture about 1,500 blockade runners over the course of the war. The ships had 12 major ports. President Lincoln very quickly declared a blockade against the main Confederate ports. To be a legal blockade this blockade simply had to present a risk to shipping trying to enter those ports.
Economically the Union was very strong and greatly outweighed the South. President Lincoln, as the war had begun, quickly declared a blockade, as described earlier, against the main Confederate ports. This was supposed to be under an international treaty, that hadn’t been signed yet, which had created the controversial political issues for Lincoln. Fortunate enough for the Union, when war broke out the United States Navy was small like it’s army, and its ships were scattered around the oceans. Of the American ships that were in surrounding waters, ten were partially destroyed or destroyed to prevent them from going to the Confederates when Virginia seceded. If they did this would have taken the Norfolk naval base with it.
