Poverty started around the 1600’s. While trade and demand increased, gaps in income became present. This is where wealth sprouted, sudden gaps in income caused more to become wealthier than others. Those not wealthy enough to afford things such as food or clothing would be considered living in poverty. Poverty is significant due to people's lack of ability to care for themselves and of their families. It is a problem because there are people all over the world who are starving without homes, food or clothes. The issue is controversial because, people living in poverty aren't able to pay for certain things they need to survive such as clothes, food and housing while others around the world live in large homes with more luxury. For example, before the event of the civil rights movement, African American people were enslaved and paid very low wages to perform very difficult tasks. They were paid only pennies a day for very hard jobs such as picking cotton, building homes and sheds, and cleaning up after their owners. African Americans lived in poverty while their owners, which were often white, lived in luxury with very expensive dresses, homes, foods and entertainment. African Americans, back then, had very little clothing and food to live off of. Their conditions were not as luxurious due to racism issues. Poverty also dates back to when people were strictly divided into social classes depending on how wealthy they were. The least wealthy were usually enslaved or participated in hard labor, which paid very little to no money at all. Poverty often took place in large areas or cities because a lot of people were trying to find jobs while many were being let go. This has impacted the world over time because almost half of the human population is living in poverty and the numbers grow every year. Most who live in poverty are immigrants. This is a major problem because especially now in America with Trump’s strict immigration laws, it is very hard to earn the money to get papers to become an American citizen. There are many illegal immigrants in America who cannot afford the papers to become legal citizens and Trump's new laws aren't much help.
