After recalling the journeys they pursued in Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein, the protagonist Victor Frankenstein and his creation The Creature reflected on their inadequacies. The self-comparisons to fallen angels also revealed irony within their analogies. Despite both Victor’s and the Creature’s views of one another as polar opposites, they had countless similarities. Between the Creature and Victor Frankenstein, the latter was correct in his comparison to the “fallen angel.” Throughout the portion of the novel where Victor and the Creature despise each other, they perceived the other as contrasting to themselves. Victor viewed the Creature as his opposite because of how much he loathed him and their numerous opposing views. For example, Victor exclaims, “Begone, vile insect! Or rather, stay, that I may trample you to dust!” Furthermore, he also states, “I do refuse it and no torture shall ever extort a consent from me,” when the Creature asks for a mate. The Creature has a similar reasoning which is amplified by the fact that Victor is his creator and essentially the root of his misery. To illustrate, the Creature howls, “Cursed, cursed creator! Why did I live? Why, in that instant, did I not extinguish the spark of existence which you so wantonly bestowed?” The Creature and Victor only view each other as polar opposites because of their mutual hate for each other and their inability to see eye to eye.
