Introduction

In the play, we learnt that King Oedipus could not escape his destiny, no matter how much effort the other parties tried to prevent the tragedy from happening. King Oedipus tried to uncover the truth regardless of the consequences that he might be facing. During the process of investigation, Oedipus believed that he was innocent. Teiresias was trying frame him because Creon’s instigation. However, the truth was exposed when Oedipus came into contact with more information and secrets. In the end, Oedipus cast judgment upon himself.

The Beginning

There are a lot of factors that contribute to Oedipus’s downfall. Even before Oedipus was born, there were prophetic signs of ill omen about his destiny. The destiny of murdering his father, and becoming his mother’s husband has already been laid and set in place.

He was too confident and complacent in his knowledge, which made him disposed the ideas of other people. His pride of wanting to showcase his ability and save his people, made him determined in finding the culprit. His desire of truth led him to the tragedy. Even though, Oedipus had the choice of not proceeding to find out the truth, he chose to continue. This was suggested in text when Jocasta insisted that Oedipus should drop the case of his identity. Oedipus replied, “I must. I cannot leave the truth unknown.” (Sophocles, 1947) His stubbornness and unwillingness to listen to other people was in his personality. This was the reason that made me think perhaps the god created his personality in life even before he was born.
