3.5 Urban social landscape transition 3.5.1 Factor-loading based analysis (1) Non-agricultural population The ‘proportion of non-agricultural population to total population’ represents the level of urbanization, and the correlation coefficient between the index and the principal component reflects its importance and contribution. In 1990, the proportion of non-agricultural population was closely related to the first principal factor, with a correlation coefficient of 0.954. The degree of correlation weakened to 0.736 in 2000, while the main contribution of the non-agricultural population was still concentrated in the first principal factor. In 2000, the composition of the family related metrics kept the similar feature with elders, 3-and-more-generation household, and divorced or widowed marital status. The contribution of this social dimension in 2000 decreased to 13.68% (the fourth factor). In 2010, family related features mentioned above split into two principal factors, i.e. elders with health concerns for the third factor and married population with children aged between 0 and 14 for the fourth factor, showing an urbanization trend with aging society as well as smaller-sized family. (4) Education levels Education developed along with urbanization process. In this research, the education levels focuses on population with high-school or post-secondary education (college and above education). In 1990, population with high school education was the main force of non-agriculturalization and employment. The correlation coefficient of high-school educated population and the first principal factor is 0.960. In the same period, the highly-educated population was reflected in the third main factor, and the correlation coefficient with the third main factor is 0. 796. In 2000, the highly-educated population was the main force of the tertiary employment and the higher income occupations, with a correlation coefficient of 0.951 with the first principal factor; in the same period, the high-school educated population associated with the employment of the secondary industry, forming the third main factor.
