Establishing an Effective Electronic Commerce Project Team

Fifty years ago, the concept of social media, cell phones, and the Internet was just being developed. Today, these types of technology are being utilized in all aspects of life. About 40% of the world’s population has access to the Internet that is roughly 3.1 million people (Internet Live States). With so many users able to access the Internet, social media is becoming a popular feature among enterprise ecommerce project teams. In this paper, we will discuss the characteristics of effective project teams; the use of virtual teams within electronic commerce projects, and the affects social media has on electronic commerce project teams. The purpose of this report is to encourage the use of social media within electronic commerce project teams while maintaining the characteristics of an effective project team.

Moving forward, social media has been a major convenience and reward to virtually everyone. On an individual basis, social media allows friends and family both near and far to communicate with one another. Also, businesses are flourishing through the use of social media. Advertising has never been easier. Horn (2013) states, “Our profession, unlike any time before, is demanding we become social media (…) experts” (1). Horn (2013) also states, “More than half of reporters (55 percent) use Twitter and Facebook to source stories” (1). Social media has greatly benefited business life and personal life.
Social media has taken over the way that we interact with one another. It is leading the way in which we communicate with family, friends, coworkers and strangers. It is also the way we keep up with our favorite celebrities and gossip. Social media and the use of smartphones are becoming more prevalent in business and the healthcare field as well. According to Pew Research Center, “62% of smartphone owners have used their phone in the past year to look up information about a health condition” (April, 2015). Over the last few decades, communication drastically changed to fit into the modern era of technology and it could be argued that technological advancements have greatly affected the way communication is conducted today. As communication and information travel faster and faster, the world has become smaller and smaller. Social media has arguably changed the way communication is done drastically. At first, communication was made through the use of mails, through a landline telephone, and through letters (Bailey 23). However, the last decade or so has seen communication be dominated by text messages, voice messages, and instant messages.
