In terms of diet, it omits any intake of animal produce, including meat, eggs and dairy. There are many benefits that come from a vegan lifestyle, some people want healthier skin or to loose weight. Others see the truth behind animal farms and slaughterhouses, the inhumane way they end the lives of thousands of animals.

When most of our time is spent recovering from school, doing homework and thinking about our future there isn't that much time for anything else.

Animal cruelty is a significant issue, but for reasons unknown, the majority of the population is unaware of the extent of the cruelty directed toward farm animals. Most people do not consider the fact that the animal, now cooked on their dinner plate, was once alive. Consumers should be concerned about where their food comes from. Although trying to educate someone who does not recognize a problem with their lifestyle is a daunting task. The vegan diet is more a lifestyle choice and a philosophy than just a diet. The vegan life is the best way to live because it’s healthier, helps the environment, and is kinder to animals.

The livestock tend to live in bad conditions, they are injected with antibiotics and emit gasses into the atmosphere that contribute to climate change. There is much controversy and hypocrisy when it comes to animals. I, along with thousands of others, am part of the hypocrisy. I squirm and feel a deep sadness when I hear or see animals being abused, yet I am a meat-eater. I have learned that we all have different opinions and taste and we can not force others to change their ways. There will always be people, like me, perhaps, who will continue to eat meat and use animal products because that is what to us is food and normality. There are many ways to solutionize this; Become vegan or vegetarian, do protests and show others the suffering animals are put through, and/or simply let those who do not choose veganism to be themselves.

It is said that “all sentient creatures have a right to life and freedom” (Benefits of a Vegan Lifestyle 3). No living being wants to be kept in a dirty, crammed, cage it’s whole life. By being a vegan, I am supporting the rights of animals to roam free in the wild.

Over the past few years, the vegan community has grown, especially here in the Portland area. Chances are you have crossed paths with someone who is vegan and you know little about it. But what does being vegan mean exactly? The dictionary definition of what a vegan is, as stated, “A person who does not eat any food that comes from animals and who often also does not use animal products,” (-Merriam Webster Dictionary). In an animal rights activist's world, animals would have the right to live free of human use and exploitation.
