INITIAL REACTION
I have seen this video a few times and my initial reaction was not this documentary again. After watching this video again, I remembered the importance of it. For me, it is an eye opener because every time I watch it I am in awe of this conversation being more than 20 years old and still relatable to today. I also think it would be valuable to film another documentary like this again today to see what changes have been made in our society. I felt that this documentary lines up with the section we are reading for class currently. I would love to be a part of a documentary like this and think it would be beneficial to also have women in the group.
It is important to see how racism affects different minorities in our society, but I also think going deeper with some of the issues that were discussed would be more beneficial. It would be really interesting if they did a second documentary with the same people to see how the past 20 years have affected them and changed them. It is so valuable to be able to listen to the stories of these men because we do not get to see what is really happening for so many people in our society. It allows you to be grateful for the courage that these men had when talking about the real issues that occur in our society every day.
Whether you are a part of the minority group or of the majority group we all have differences and similarities as we could see in this documentary. We are all unique beings and there is no other person
Hello, I really enjoyed the film. I think that having a "modern-day" presentation really caught my attention. I enjoyed the sound on the background of the movie; it made the movie more intriguing. In addition, I think that a documentary could be boring, but who does not like to watch movies? Most of us do. Learning about the Women's Suffrage Movement in a modern movie was great. I think we retain better by watching a modern movie that listen to documentaries. One scene that stood out in my mind was when the police was feeding a prisoner with a tube. I could not believe that the American Government could not allow citizens to express their discontent about their government policies. I felt that in this scenario, the government did not allow
Part two of the documentary which was labeled as “High and Low” struck out to me the most. This part brought up issues that we can all for the most part say we have at least saw in our daily lives. This section also brought up some of the many struggles that African-Americans have to deal with every day. For example, two women brought up the point that the label “Bourgeois” is a constant problem within black America. If a black person works hard to make a lot of money, get a good education and become successful, the black
1. What do you think is the most important thing you learned from this documentary?
I really enjoyed this documentary because it made me realize just how lucky I am for the life I was given. It changed my perception of happiness in so many ways. It made me realize that I have more than I need to live a happy life. Other people around the world don’t have as nice of a house or even a house at all to live in and are so much happier than I am and that is something that sparked my attention. For example, the man who lives in India, Manoj Singh, he lives in what looks like poverty to me, but to him, he lives well. There are times where his family are only able to eat rice and he has no air conditioning in his home, but he still remains a very happy man. When he mentioned that there are times where his family only eats rice, it instantly made me feel awful because I have all the food in the world around me and I still take it for granted some days. I also take my family for granted at times. For instance, the man from Louisiana, his family and friends are what make him happy the most. He is simply grateful for them while
Ending of this Introduction to Ethnic course I will discuss of two key learning moments that will stay with me upon my departure from this course. I also will discuss of learning tools that help guided me through this course. In addition, I will discuss of what I had gained fromthe two moments of learning. Lastly, I will share how I can continue to learn and discuss about ethnic-studies related issues.
4. Give your review of this documentary. What did or didn’t you like? Are there issues, opinions, or voices that are left
I thought the ethnographic work done by Dr. Myerhoff was done very well. She went into great detail about the rituals and parties that these elders had at their senior center. She did an amazing job of asking for descriptive feedback from the Jewish elders. This gave me a deeper understanding of their culture and how it affects them as individuals. This documentary is more mindful of the culture than the last film on Sara Baartman. I also liked how the film addressed the problem of valuing looks in our society. When we should be valuing what’s on the inside and not what’s on the
Although most of the material was that in the movie related to something we have learned previously in the course, it still offered new insight to certain aspects. One of the things I liked most about the documentary was as stated before was its ability to incorporate relatively everything we learned in the class. Such as having people from other documentaries, books and articles. Another thing I liked about the documentary was how despite reviewing a lot of material, it also gave real-life accounts of what was going on during that time. Overall the documentary sparked the interest in me to understanding more about how minorities, homosexuals, and hemophiliacs were treated before after and during the AIDS
I can’t say that I honestly enjoyed watching it, but then again that is not the point of a documentary such as this. This documentary, although not the most exciting to watch, forces you to constantly evaluate and consider the information being presented to you. There were times I would have to rewind just to give my thoughts a second to catch up, and in that sense, the film fully accomplished its goal. In discussing complicated ideas such as education, employment, and obedience it showed me just how narrow my scope of the world is, and I think I can better understand what the narrator meant and how he felt when he said: “almost everything I was brought up to believe turns out to be
The narrator of the documentary brought on several of guests, who are famous from various things. These things vary from being and actress to being an African-American studies professor at a university. He shows the ancestry of these people and their genetic makeup. The narrator gathered these groups of individuals and got a group of scientist testing various things to test their historical
No matter where we are to go, there will always be a society, expectations, limits, love, and hate. It is never ending, but that is not the only reason people are feeling like they do. The documentary first focuses on the downgrading of women.
If i could create a documentary I would create one about the daily acts of discrimination people face. Everyday people of all colors, races and genders face discrimination and its not fair or right. For example the movement #BlackLivesMatter is a movement that started on the internet and i think it’s amazing because so many people have become more aware of the discrimination black people face everyday that they shouldn’t. In my documentary I would highlight the little things people say and the stereotypes non people of color caterogorize black people in. Another issue I would bring up is how people automatically associate terrrorism with muslims and middle eastern people. As we all should know, Not all Muslims and middle easterns are terrorists
Overall I thought this was a really good movie. I thought it taught you a lot about diversity, women’s rights, poverty and peace. The movie was a very touching and inspiring movie; there is also a lot of emotion due to what they had to deal with on an everyday basis. To me the movie and their stories really teach you that you should be aware of your surroundings and to be helpful in your
This video relates to several chapters in our sociology book, the main chapter being chapter ten, race and ethnicity. This movie focused on the struggle in our country with discrimination of those
In terms of what I found “useful” and interesting about this documentary, it was helpful for me to see a representative panel of perspectives compiled into a short film. The issue of the basis of sexual orientation is very politically-charged, despite its scientific origin. It was particularly fascinating to consider how individuals with a negative perception of homosexuality and pro-LBGT advocates are finding common ground in advocating against the theory of a genetic source
