Seeing things under this light, it is easy to recognize the strong link that exists between ethos, ritual and everyday life. According to Aldo N. Terrin (1999, 153)1,“ritual explains itself because it explains life, creating a feed-back originated with it. [Ritual] is a primum that can not be perceived outside the contexts of daily situations of the real life”, therefore we are able to observe it inside the “fundamental behaviors” of people “within the obvious facts of their life”. According to this theologian, the fact that ritual belong to the world of obviousness, makes very difficult any reading of it. Therefore to consider ritual within the frame of the real life, «should be prior to any interpretive reading». It seems to me that the statement
One of the most inspirational speeches from the movie Any Given Sunday, directed by Oliver Stone, occurs during a football team's pre-game warm up. In the movie, there is a fictional professional football team who is struggling to bring home any wins for their home town. The speech is delivered by the head coach who is played by Al Pacino. At the end of his speech, the team’s coach has proven how effective the use of ethos, pathos, and logos can be.
Rituals are events that provide a sense of acceptance and that are done regularly and enjoyed by many. Rituals mainly refer to a family, religious or community ceremony, rituals also express emotions such as love and togetherness. The ritual of the Eucharist has changed dramatically over the past years from the last supper, where Jesus shared his body to his disciples.
Lawmakers in Florida voted on whether or not they should change the state’s death penalty statute. The death penalty system in Florida is a bit different than it is in other states. Instead of the jury deciding who is given the death penalty, the judge decides. The new bill that was passed stated that at least 10 out of the 12 jurors had to recommend the death penalty, not just a majority. A judge in Alabama, “ruled that her state’s capital sentencing setup was unconstitutional.” The judge said judges are overriding jury recommendations when it comes to the death penalty. Alabama attempted to halt an inmate’s execution because of the similarities it had to the Florida system that was shut down. After hearing these things about both Alabama and Florida, Utah actually abolished the capital punishment. Due to the changes being made, two different executions that were supposed to occur this month were put on hold.
Every Culture has a set of rituals that they partake in, that are often constructed over a long period of time. Simple Actions, and special moments contain so much meaning and make everlasting memories. All rituals despite the locations they originate from, or the location they are carried out in contain the same components, they are repetitive, symbolic, remind a certain group of people about their values and beliefs, and these rituals commemorate a significant moment. For example christians commemorate the birth of christ by attending mass, and many other cultures celebrate this moment in many different ways that have in depth symbolic meaning. In the book “Guests of the Sheik” by Elizabeth Warnock Fernea rituals play a major role. Fernea’s husband Bob is an anthropologist studying the occupants of a small village named El Nahra and their culture. Fernea has documented her experiences, and adventures, and her perspective of the many rituals that the townspeople participate in such as, Ramadan, Muharram, weddings, and pilgrimages. In Muslim culture pilgrimages are immensely important and can even lead to an elevated status. Such as the pilgrimage to Mecca. Fernea is able to participate in a pilgrimage to Karbala with a couple of the towns women she had befriended. The Pilgrimage to Karbala is a symbolic, and cultural ritual in the aspect that it is reenacted every year, and is full of symbolic meaning, commemorates an important occasion and reminds a culture about their
Now that I am able to draw a parallel with something I am familiar with, Greek organizations, I understand the importance behind religious rituals. Although it can be easy to question the practices as an outsider, I know first-hand what it feels like to be better connected with other members and the institution as a whole through participating in ritual. I now realize that although some aspects of ritual might seem to be extreme, individuals often come out on the other end with a greater sense of purpose and devotion. As individuals participate in ritual, group morale is often augmented; just like a baseball player’s confidence and enthusiasm might be improved through participating in a daily routine. Reading Gmelch and Sosis’s articles consecutively allowed me to better understand the common elements of a given ritual. Gmelch’s article helped me attribute a humanistic aspect to religious ritual, since I previously understood sports superstition at a deeper level. By combining an idea with which I was familiar with an idea I did not have extensive knowledge of, my understanding of both topics
The American society tends to feel very high and superior to other cultures in the world. The Unites States is the home to multiple revolutionary technological, medical, and numerous advances. The country is in a developed state that other countries tend to look at in order to know how to grow and advance. However, when looked at from the outside, things that are done everyday, “rituals”, can seem strange. Horace Miner wrote the essay “Body Ritual Among the Nacirema” in order to highlight actions people do everyday in a way that opens the eyes of the reader. Although the rituals seem strange out of place, Miner had a specific purpose to give a new perspective and to leave a lasting effect of thought and change on the reader.

At first you never really think as to why something is not working out, or for example why people are not liking your book or article. You have to think of ethos, pathos, and logos and if you covered all of them. If you don’t have ethos in your life or book you will be missing its appeal to ethics and no one will believe that you are real or credible. If you are missing pathos you are missing the appeal to emotion and people won’t be convinced that you know what you are talking about. If you are missing logos you are missing the appeal to logic and will have a tough time persuading anyone. When it comes to day to day life you don’t really think about ethos, pathos, or logos but sometimes you have to stop and think. Just like in the video no
Rituals connect something beyond the person through the shared sentiments and meaning that they create. Rituals are meaningful to the person and to the society as
Christian beliefs of life are a sacred gift from God. For me personally, I do believe that life and all of its wonders is a gift given to us from God, and that all life should be respected. My belief as a Christian is that our lives are not our own, but God’s. He created us in His image and for a purpose, giving us a type of sacredness. As Christians, at least how I believe, we are suppose to want to give our lives up to God, and through His son Jesus Christ in us, to be a light to the world to show God’s love and grace to others. This action resembles a type of duty, or an obligation that is assigned to us by our Creator, making our very being sacred.
By definition a ritual is a religious or solemn ceremony consisting of a series of actions preformed according to a prescribed order. In the short story “The Lottery”, on June 27th each year, all of the citizens in this village are ordered to meet. Usually the father of every family would walk up to a black box they had sitting on a stool in the center of the citizens and pull out a folded slip of paper. If the father of the family was not able to attend, either the mother or a son who is of age would walk up when their last name is called to pick up the slip of paper. They were not allowed to look at their slip of paper until every family had gotten one and after that, they all opened them. Every single slip was blank except for one, which
Right now violence and discrimination are happening between different cultures across the world. The lack of understanding and compassion to live among each other besides our differences has caused a clash in cultures, or contact zones. Every day a culture is being limited and belittled due to the perception of what others think it is. For thousands of years misinterpretations and stereotypes have been made about different cultures. During slavery, Africans were seen as uneducated, savage, and uncivilized because of their differences from American culture. Although the Africans had an entire culture established before America was even discovered, they were still seen as the “other”.
Courtney was not available to meet in person due to the time constraints. This was unfortunate because I would have preferred to do the interview in person, as it is easier to talk to people and is an important way of getting information from someone. We decided on doing a Skype session to talk about Jimmy and his disability. We decided on talking at 7 P.M. on a Wednesday night and allowed one and a half hours to talk about Jimmy. Since I have known Jimmy for many years, I did not want to come in to the interview with a bias. I asked very straightforward, basic, probing questions, assuming I did not know anything about Jimmy or his disability. Courtney is very passionate about working with children with Autism; she also studies Neuroscience
The purpose of this research paper will be to examine how Judaism rituals have helped the religion remained amongst the most prominent in the world. The use of tradition and rituals has been at the very core of its existence. Birth, adolescent, marriage and death rituals will be used to highlight how the Judaism way of life is not dependent on the written word but rather the actions of those who follow this historic Hebrew religion. The paper will begin with a brief outline of Judaism and its relationship with God and then continue with how the written word of the Torah has laid the basis for the many traditions still practiced in Judaism.
Many people in civilized cultures associate rituals with only religious or witchcraft settings. Although they are a big part of those two lifestyles, rituals take place in non-religious and non-spiritual manners as well. A specific, more complex definition was provided by John Skorupski where he describes rituals as “interaction ceremonies in which humans as agents interact with other agents by communicating in interaction code” (Eller 2015: 103). In a more general sense, a ritual is a distinct way of creating or effecting social relationships through formalization, social prescription, and symbolic behavior. With that said, birthdays, funerals, Christmas or thanksgiving ceremonies, as well as weddings could all be
