To be considered part of a marginalized group can be polarizing. On one hand the knowledge that an intrinsic part of a person can be controversial can discourage an individual- after all changing the core tenets of who you are is difficult. However, marginalization also presents an opportunity to bring change on an unprecedented level. In movements such as women's right and rights for individuals of color, marginalized individuals brought about tremendous amounts of change by simply channeling their energies towards change. The continued success of both of these movements have resulted in two magnanimous products; the feminist movement and the pioneering advancements in civil rights. While these two movements have garnered change, the moment when race and gender meet has reached a standstill.

Her criticisms are based in the economic ramifications of intersectionality instead of just the social. Mitchell’s criticisms start with stating that intersectionality relies too heavily on at least one factor of unification between marginalized groups, which is partially true; intersectionality is based on unifying individuals based on shared difficulties. The dilemma faced with this is as, Salem say “intersectionality is unable to overcome identity politics, and is in essence a bourgeois ideology”. To put this into more understandable terms, people who share similarities (race, gender, class, religion, etc) have a tendency to form exclusive political groups and movements. This point is taken even further with the inclusion of bourgeois (a person marked by conformity or conventions of the middle class).
