What’s Maggie’s smile have to do with anything? Why is it important for me to know the significance of Maggie’s smile? These are some questions that I would like to know the answer to as a reader of the short story Everyday Use (for your grandma) by Alice walker. In order to get to the bottom of what’s behind Maggie’s smile there is some analyzing to do. The author used a great approach, by setting the stage with a background of the characters. In my opinion all the main characters that play a major role in the buildup of Maggie’s smile ,are Dee the oldest sister, Mama (which whom is never given a real name), and their ancestors. There are other things which contribute to the importance of Maggie’s smile, but won’t make any sense without the characters background. With that being said Maggie, Dee, and Mama were in a house fire which resulted in a complete contrast between the two sisters. Maggie suffered from third degree burns whilst escaping the house fire. From then on out the oldest sister Dee was the center of attention, which made Maggie self-conscious. While Maggie whom was more valued of life’s precious uses, her sister Dee had a totally different mindset. Dee is more engaging and adventurous and she is well educated. Maggie is somewhat of the opposite of Dee, more down to earth, unaware of the outside world and much wiser about the use of what was passed down from relatives. However, Mama and Maggie clearly defines family and cultural heritage through their knowledge of everyday traditional practices, such as churning butter and quilting. However, her assertiveness might come off as cockiness, and too much pride. By contrasting Maggie and Dee, Alice Walker is expressing both sides of the female role during that time.
Momma's point of view defines how she feels about her daughters and the degrees of separation that exist between the two girls. Momma describes Maggie as a partially educated child who does not look as appealing as her older sister. Maggie was burned in a house fire that left her scared all over her body. She does not wear revealing clothes, nor does she attract men as Dee does. Dee, on the other hand, is described as an educated young woman who is ready to take on any and every adventure. Momma says that Dee used to read to her and Maggie without pity (94). She describes Dee as the stylish child; she always prepared dresses out of momma's old suits and is always up on the current style. Momma likes the different qualities Dee possesses, but she is slightly threatened because they are unfamiliar to her. From the description that momma gives of her daughters the reader can feel the differences that exist in her thoughts about her daughters.
Maggie the younger sister lived with her mother and liked the life of her living with her mother. Dee didn't like that poor old-fashioned life and she wants to be rich and to forget about this poor family and to live her actual way of life as an African-American. Mama liked their way of life and didn't want to change it and also Maggie liked it and didn't want to change it.
In the story, she introduces two sisters with almost opposite personalities and different views on heritage: Maggie and Dee. Since I am the first child, it was just me and my mother in one apartment where she worked two jobs to make a living. Then when my sister came along, my mother went back to college to get a better job. She put us before herself and she was just 30 years old. Often siblings are brought up in the same environment and turn out completely different. This is the case in Alice Walkers, “Everyday Use”. Although two sisters, Maggie and Dee, are raised by the same woman and in the same home, their similarities end here. Both are different in their appearance, personalities, and ideas about family heritage. Each having opposing views on value and worth of the various items in their lives. Walker uses this conflict to make the point that the use of an object and of people, is more important than style.
The narrator described herself as large, big-boned woman with rough, man-working hands. She said she can kill and clean a hog as mercilessly as a man, and her fat keeps her hot in zero weather (444). She seemed to be a hard working woman, who differently from Dee is proud of her heritage and where she came from. It is understood she knew she may not have had the best life possible, but made the best of it. She knew Dee was the successful, popular child, but once Dee returned home with a changed name she saw her in a different light. She realized Dee’s doings were from throwing out the cultural heritage she belonged to into the new, hip black movement. She seemed to appreciate Maggie more after Dee tried to remove things from their house to show off. When Dee argued with her about giving the quilts to her instead of Maggie who was used to never winning, or having anything reserved for her the mother grabbed the quilts from Dee and handed them to Maggie. The mother is very grateful for her children, but is not going to let Dee, the daughter who has “made it”, take over the quilts meant for Maggie once she married.
