Similar to Wise Blood, O’Connor’s short story Everything that Rises Must Converge, also explores the theme of the past and the present through Julian, his mother, and the lady on the bus. Julian, similar to Hazel, holds onto the past through dreams and images, of his grandfather’s large house and wealth, while in the present he blames his mother for being outdated and poor. Julian blames his mother for losing the wealth of his family as his holds on to the past by dreaming of what could have been. The next quote portrays Julian’s longing for the wealth that his family lost. “[the mansion] appeared in his dreams regularly… it occurred to him that it was he, not she, who could have appreciated it” (O’Connor 3). In Wise Blood Hazel uses the church without Christ to deal with his past, but Julian uses his animosity towards his mother to handle the past. He continues to make mistakes in the present as he attempts to blame someone for the loss of his past. While Julian and Hazel are similar as they both dream of the past Julian looks back with awe while Hazel’s view of the past is much more negative. Fueled by the desire of the past Julian constantly makes mistakes in the present, especially in the way he treats his mother. Like Enoch in Wise Blood, Julian’s mother is unable to move on from the past as she holds onto it strongly stating life was better before. Julian’s mother grew up as a rich Caucasian girl in the south causing her to view herself as above people of colour and this results in her being racist in the present. The following quote displays her attitude in the present due to the way she was raised in the past. “‘There are no more slaves’ he said irritably. ‘they were better off when they were’ she said” (2). This quote makes it evident that Julian’s mother has not moved on from the past and the past continues to impact her judgment of people in the
