A research done by Tambyah and Oon (2012) shown that the prevalence of infection related to urinary catheter is of significant concerned issues globally. About 75% of the urinary tract infections result from urinary catheter and between 15-25% of the hospitalized patients need catheterization during their hospitalization in adult settings (World Health Organization, 2014). However, as evidenced by statistics done by Centers For disease Control And Prevention (2015), there is a significant decrease of 6% in the catheter infection from 2009 to 2014. As a result, however, the National Infection Prevention targetted to further reduce the infection rate by 2020 with reduction by 25%. Furthermore, catheter related infections had proven to increase mortality rate and increased period of hospitalization. Decisions and encouragement on reduced catheterization is one of the ‘Top Ten’ Patient Safety Strategies (Shekelle et al, 2013). However, at some situations, catheterization is needed. As known, the indication of urinary catheterization is for strict intake output of patients, patients having urinary incontinence and critically ill patients, especially bed-ridden patients (Wilson, 2011). Urinary catheter insertion is one of the procedures in the National Patient Safety Goal Programme (The Joint Commission, 2014) as it is among the procedures with high risk exposure to infection.
