Human beings are born innocent and with all the potential to be good, and it is the environment and situations surrounding an individual that will shape them, for good or for evil. Although the author, William Golding, of the novel Lord of the Flies believes that every human is born with the prosperity to do evil, his book disproves this belief. Throughout the boy’s time alone on an island, specific characters and situations prove that human nature is in fact, naturally good. Evil is a very ambiguous idea capable of different definitions. An act can be evil and person can perform an evil act, but that does not automatically make that person an evil being. The definition of evil is knowing the difference between what is right and what is wrong, but willingly choosing and enjoying making the decision that is wrong with out any guilt. At this point there is ultimate chaos unleashing around the island, and Jack’s tribe sets the whole island on fire. Every savage boy is looking for Ralph with the intent to kill him. Just in time, naval officers come to the beach to rescue the boys, and take them home. Everyone stops what they were doing as soon as they realize there are grownups, and return to their boyish youthful selves. The description of Jack includes a “little boy who wore the remains of an extraordinary black cap . . . started forward, then changed his mind and stood still” (Golding 201). This description of Jack as a timid little kid is the first weak depiction of him in the novel. The whole group of boys immediately return to their previous youthful, innocent selves when society and rules are reintroduced by adults coming onto the island. This shows that the evil acts done by any of these boys are circumstantial. It takes days and weeks for these boys to turn to savage ways of life, but only seconds for them to return to their pure young childlike
