Hindu society is plagued by the ills of caste system and of late, this problem has taken the proportions of Goliath and is threatening the very integrity of the nation. The society in India is rather divided on the basis of caste and not a single day passes without an incident where caste becomes the focal point. Recently in Maharashtra State a Dalit family of four was done to death by the upper caste Hindus and there was big riot and arson in the State. Similar incidents also take place in other State from time to time. Trains were burnt, shops were looted and life came to stand still. Once, he went to a hermitage and there he and his retinue were treated by the most revered and illustrious sage Vashishta by the grace of the divine cow Surabhi that could bestow any thing at request. Knowing the divine powers of the divine cow, the king wanted to take away the Cow from the hermitage and this was resisted viciously by the cow and Vashishta. Inspite of great army at hand, the King could not take possession of the divine cow and had to retreat in defeat and utter shame. He realized that his kingly powers were of no use against the spiritual powers of Sage Vashishta. He then took a vow that he would attain the status of Brahamrshi by undergoing penance and accordingly, he relinquished his throne and retired to the forests where he underwent great penances. Although he attained great powers, these were of no use against Vishwamitra as he could not overcome his ego that was a trait of the ruling class and was addressed as Rajarshi (stature lesser than Brahmarshi). Finally, he could attain his goal with great determination and sacrifice and self illumination and Vishwamitra accepted him a Brahmarshi and as Brahman as the one who attained highest knowledge. This goes to show that one could attain higher position in the structure of Varna by gaining higher and superior knowledge and by exemplary conduct.
