As I have stated earlier Abigail wants John Proctor, She and John proctor had an affair in his household as she served them in it. She was so desperate she tried to kill John Proctor’s wife basically using witchcraft, aka drinking blood. Betty says, “You did, you did! You drank a charm to kill John Proctor’s wife! You drank a charm to kill Goody Proctor!” (919); Abigail already has a bad image going for her since she was fired from her job for “no reason”. If we are counting the girl already has a terrible reputation, she had her fun with a married man but after getting kicked out, but she is STILL pursuing him. You are young there are many single young men out there, get something better to do with your life, you are out here letting people …show more content…
And you know I can do it; I saw Indians smash my dear parent’s heads on the pillow next to mine, and I have seen some reddish work done at night, and I can make you wish you had never seen the sun go down! Now, you—sit up and stop this!” (920). This supports what I said earlier about her parents and the point I am about to make; Abigail will stop at nothing to get Proctor back she has been caught in the act of doing so which is going to make a way bigger problem than it needs to. I am not going to lie, If Elizabeth did not fire her the affair would have continued because there would have been nothing stopping them, their actions satisfied them and why would you stop something you enjoy. Elizabeth was no fool she saw what was going on and eradicated the situation immediately which of course upset Abigail that was the only thing standing in her way. Now that her and Proctor saw each other again he had no desire to continue their affair because he had already disrespected his wife, why go out of his way to start something up again that ruined his …show more content…
I want the light of god, I want the sweet love of Jesus! I danced for the Devil; I saw him; I wrote in his book; I go back to Jesus; I kiss His hand. I saw Sarah Good with the devil! I saw Goody Osburn with the Devil! I saw Bridget Bishop with the Devil!” (934). This statement was made by Abigail basically to put more attention on her, the more attention she got the closer she is to being so believable she can insult the best person there is and people will still believe her. It will take a lot of innocent people’s lives to get exactly what she
Abigail is not only a liar she is selfish. She tells lies that hurt others in order to help herself and she is devious. In the court room she announces, "I want to open myself! . . . I want the light of God, I want the sweet love of Jesus! I danced for the Devil, I saw him, I wrote in his book, I go back to Jesus, I kiss His hand. I saw Sarah
I hope you are well despite the recent events that have disturbed our town. In the past, I understand that I may have hurt you. However, I write to you as a man who fears for the stability of his town, not as a former companion. I always take it upon myself to judge others, and now I judge myself as well. Since I believe in the need for honesty, I am prepared to go to court to expose us if I must. I simply hope that will not be necessary, and that you and I can come to a compromise. Think of how it felt when your heart broke, how easily that could happen, and how debilitating heartbreak can be. This town is as fragile as a heart, and it feels the strain of jealousy and mistrust. Like a heart, after just one break or crack, it takes time and care to make the town whole again. As loathe as I am to admit to my selfishness, I must disclose that I do not wish to tarnish my reputation. Abigail, it is absolutely imperative that you reveal your lies because, if you do not, countless innocents will die and mistrust will thrive.
Abigail wants to get rid of Elizabeth, who she describes as John Proctor’s “sniveling envious wife” (Optional scene Pg. 158)! One can infer how Abigail is jealous and is doing anything to steel Elizabeth’s place in Proctor’s bed. It reaches a degree were Abigail is lies so much she starts to believe her lies, and stabs herself in the stomach with a pin to blame Elizabeth for attempting to kill her. She later goes on trying to convince Proctor that “the jab your wife gave me’s not healed yet” (Optional scene Pg. 155). The revenge that Abigail is seeking to find is directly related to the theme of vengeance that is profound throughout the play. Additionally, other people in Salem, such as the Putnam’s, take advantage of the crisis to help achieve their
Abigail knows how to manipulate people, and she is good at it. In Act I, she says, “Do you begrudge my bed, uncle?” (834)., she is manipulating Parris into believing her. Also in Act I, she tells the girls what their story is when they are about to be questioned when she says “Now look you. All of you. We danced. And Tituba conjured Ruth Putnam’s dead sisters. And that is all.” (837). Later on in the play, Hale tells Tituba that she has confessed to witchcraft and asks her if anybody was with the devil when she was approached.
Abigail's deception toward the people is driven by her lust for power. Abigail begins to accuse others of being witches, so she can build up her power and reliability. She carefully selects defenseless targets at first to accuse, only those that would be believable when in court. Each of the innocent people that Abigail condemns to hang gives her more credibility, gaining her more power over the court and the people. Abigail continues to grow closer to the big picture every time she gains power. Abigail is viewed as a threat; since her lust for power made her into a ruthless person. Abigail in the manner of a leader convinces the other girls to follow her; those who are frightened by her are the ones who join her. She needs more people on her
Elizabeth Proctor might be portrayed as only inverse of Abigail. A dependable wife of John Proctor, Elizabeth demonstrated to her group proper methodologies to be more than an observer in life. John thought of her the sweetest, most sure, and legit lady he has ever met. The point when deciding his hanging, John offered Elizabeth to discuss an occurrence that as of late happened on the grounds that he knew she might tell the complete truth, regardless of the possibility that his life was at stake. He said to the judges "Throughout her life sir, she will never lie" (Miller, Act 3). Despite the fact that Proctor submitted infidelity, Elizabeth chipped away at pardoning him due to her kind and religious heart. She never surrendered attempting to get John to concentrate on her again. For instance, she says "You'll tear it free- when you come to realize that I will be your just wife, or no wife whatsoever. She has a shaft in you yet, John Proctor, and you know it well!" (Miller, Act 2).
Adultery. Abigail Williams is the young niece of Salem's Minister, Reverend Parris, she also was once John Proctor's housemaid until his wife, Elizabeth, put her out because of the affair. Abigial was just a young girl, she felt as if her feelings for John Proctor were ‘true love’, this drove her to do some of the most unspeakable things. She was seeking vengeance on Elizabeth since she put her out on the street, “blackened her name throughout the town” and she had the man she loved. Abigail's best way of getting things done was through manipulation, which she was best at. She voluntarily used witchcraft to ‘curse’ Elizabeth and yet turned witchcraft accusations against everyone of Salem. “I will come to you in the black of the night and will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you”(19), is one threat Abigail used to keep the girls mouth shut. She was a power hungry girl who did anything to keep the power for her own selfish gains. When she realized she was losing her power she claims “I have been near to murdered every day because I done my duty pointing out the Devil’s people- and this is my reward? To be mistrusted, denied, question like a -”(100) this was her way out of the truth. This shows Abigail's true
Since Abigail is the Reverends niece and grew up with a pastor in the household it seems as if she should be very humble and a good person but her human nature took a toll making her greedy therefore making her dishonest and deceptive. She is afraid that people won’t agree with her, that motivates her to get people on her side. She then falsely accuses others of witchcraft and her being the victim. Witchcraft was taken very seriously back then and it ended up ripping apart the town and caused non stop fighting by almost everyone. Abigail’s main motive is John Proctor so she tries to lie to John about his wife to get him to fall for her “She is blackening my name in the village she is telling lies about me she’s a cold swiveling
She thinks that if she gets rid of Proctor's wife that her and procter can be together. John has told Abigail that this is not the case and that he loves his wife and will not leave Elizabeth. Abigail decides to off her anyway just because she has the power to do so. When one is sixteen years old and the fate of people's lives are at their hands this is just too much power and (especially if she is jealous of the life that is at stake). This power that she has corrupts Abigail's already corrupted mind ino just doing whatever she wants. When Abigail accuses John's wife Elizabeth of being a witch and the whole town just goes along with it, (even though there are rumors of an affair). The whole town turning a blind eye about the affair just shows the reader how much power she has over the town. It also shows that she is using the power for personal gain definitely not for the good of the
After having an affair with John Proctor, she couldn’t accept not being without him. Abigail also admires “how such a strong man may let such a sickly wife” like Elizabeth be unaware of the affair she had with John Proctor(act1pg#). As a result to the affair, Proctor is trying to rebuild his marriage with his wife. Abigail continues to intervene in John Proctors marriage and attempts to manipulate Proctor so he would confess his love for her. Proctor admits his love for her, but does not continue his affection because Abigail seeps of vengeance for other individuals. He portrays her “as a lump of vanity” who thinks to dance on his “wife’s grave!”(act 3). For her own selfish desires, Abigail accuses Elizabeth of witchcraft and tries to intentionally sabotage her. She does this for the purpose of her own selfish and fictitious relationship that she has with Proctor. Abigail believes she has the capability to influence Proctor, but her egoistic actions to win his undefining love makes her appear as the criminal in the
A great noble person who happen to have some flaws in them, those flaws happen to make them make a bad decision and turns into a mistake very quickly that same mistake happens to become his weakness that makes this person suffer greatly through everything happening. John Proctor comes to mind he fits that description perfectly. John Proctor has made a terrible mistake in his past and it is gonna be part of the cause of the whole accident going on. John Proctor is a very noble person, he helps his town in many different ways. John Proctor built the door of the church, goes into town when he is needed.
I can’t sleep tonight after my wife was arrested for witchcraft. I can’t believe that Abigail has gone so far. I want to say you many things to the judge Danfort, Elizabeth and to my community. These thought troubles me its my name and reputation to our church and community.
In the story of “The Crucible” Abigail is guilty because she had an affair with john, she lied to others, had blamed many others than herself.
Abigail also wanted to complete the relationship with her old lover John Proctor. In act 1, Abigail and Betty had a little chat that she only wanted to take out John Proctors new lover, Elizabeth. But, Abigail, also, had an affair with John Proctor and she has been all over him since and it doesn’t seem to be affecting the way that John Proctor feel about Abigail nor Elizabeth. So, Abigail plan is to get rid of Elizabeth or kill her, in order to get John Proctor
Today i went to salem for the witch trials. Abigail has made a debacle of a trial and it is unnecessary, i know she is a fraud but i’m scared to tell anyone because i think she will kill me…
