Allegory is the depiction of an otherworldly or intangible meaning with a materialistic article. Nathaniel Hawthorne uses allegory multiple times in his short stories “The Birthmark” and “A Rose for Emily”. During, conversation in “The Birthmark” Aylmer the husband of Georgiana queries his wife as to why she never contemplated having her mark removed. “To tell you the truth it has been so often called a charm…” Georgiana has never questioned her mark, believing it must be a charm or a mystical manifestation.
