Esperanza Rising, by Pam Munoz-Ryan, chronicles one year in Esperanza's life. Over the course of the story, the young teenager experienced many challenges. She loses her father, her home, and everything she has ever known even almost her mother! However, following the example of her mother and grandmother, Esperanza is able to adapt to and succeed in the changing world around her. Esperanza and her life can be greatly compared to a rose. At the beginning of the book, esperanza's life was perfect. She had a loving father, a thoughtful grandmother, and her brave mother. She had money and endless land. This can act like pedals, nice, beautiful, and peaceful. But then it all fell down. Father died. The house burnt to a crisp, and their money looked
In the book Esperanza’s papa is murdered by bandits. This was very hard for her because they were very close. They would pick grapes together and start the harvest. It was right before her birthday that she realizes that her papa was killed. He had given her a doll that was very special
While Carmen helping poor people Esperanza confused because she didn’t think of poor can help each other. She was confused because the way she raised were different compared to other people. Finally, Esperanza realized that there are more profound aspects in life than being
Being an immigrant you have to leave your old life behind. The main character is Esperanza Ortega from the book Esperanza Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan. Esperanza was a wealthy land owners daughter who lived in Mexico. Her family had to move to America because of her Papa's death. They had to become a servant herself instead of having servants. Although Esperanza faced many challenges as an immigrant, her hardest ones were when Esperanza did not know how to do daily chores because she had always had servants and that the dust storms caused Mama to become sick with Valley Fever.
In Esperanza Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan, a selfish girl named Esperanza learns the truth of God that hard work and trials produce good character when she goes from being a wealthy Mexican to a poor peasant. In the beginning, on the train when the little girl reaches out to touch Esperanzas' doll, she pulls it away because she does not want the little girl to touch her doll because she is dirty. Next, when Esperanza begins to grow older she tells Miguel that “we are on different sides of the river” as to that he was a servant and, moreover, she was a wealthy privileged Mexican. These examples show how Esperanza believes that she was better than the servants and often puts herself higher than others out of selfishness. Later, Esperanza states that
What would you do it you were mexican, then came to America and had to face discrimination? Immigrants that are mexican face these problems almost everyday. Esperanza Ortega from the book “ Esperanza Rising” by Pam Munoz Ryan is facing the same problems. She lived in Mexico in Aguascalientes, she got forced to leave Mexico and move to the U.S. There in the U.S. she faced discrimination, and many more problems. Although Esperanza faced many challenges as an immigrant, her hardest ones were doing chores and facing discrimination.
Esperanza is an only child in her family, and during this time it was not acceptable for woman to own land. When Esperanza’s papa gets killed there were no other men in the family, so the land that Esperanza had grew up on and loved would soon all be taken away, unless her mama sacrificers herself and marries the rude brother of Esperanza’s papa. This idea of men owning land is one main reason why Esperanza’s family must migrate to California. If Esperanza was male, this story would not exist because the land would be given to her. Since Esperanza is a female, the story has a complication in the plot that needs to be overcame. This is the first obstacle that Esperanza must triumph over: leaving home to somewhere unknown.
Esperanza was a girl that believed her life would be a good life forever and ever . She lived on her family ranch in Mexico she wore fancy dresses and had a nice home . Esperanza is a shy but a very bright girl. She dreams of the perfect home now, with beautiful flowers in their luscious garden and a room for everyone to live in comfortably all because of the unsatisfied face the nun made that one afternoon--when she moves to the house of Mango Street. She thinks it’s going to be a “grand house on a hill that will have a bedroom for everyone and at least three washrooms so when they took a bath they would not have to tell everybody.” (Cinceros 4) Reality is so different for her when her dream is shot down in a heartbeat when she
As I stated before “ Esperanza Rising’’ is a story about a girl named Esperanza who loved her land. As this book continues her father was killed by bandits. After her father's death she basically lost everything.Tio
To say that Esperanza was sad at the beginning of the novel would be an understatement because so much had changed in a short period of time. Esperanza and her father were very close, when her father was killed by bandits her entire world changed for the worst. With her Papa’s stepbrothers seizing her ranch, forcing her mother into marriage, her home burning down, her Abuelita being injured and relocating to the United States it was hard to find something to be happy about. She was forced to start from scratch.
With all of the bad things going on around Esperanza, she was very optimistic and made the best of everything she could. For example, in chapter one, Esperanza explain how she and her family had always grown up poor and that they always had dreams of one day owning a big beautiful house like the ones that they saw on television. One with a back yard and a basement. When Esperanza's family was forced to move her parents had purchased the first house that they could afford so they wouldn't have to continue paying rent. The house was nothing like what they had spoke of or dreamt about. But Esperanza states, "I then knew I had to have a house. One I could point to. But this isn't it. The house on Mango Street isn't it. For the time being, Mama said. Temporary, says Papa. But I know how those things go.." Within this paragraph it shows that Esperanza isn't exactly happy about where she is living but she is going to make the best of it and do what she has to do to get out of there and have a house of her own. One that she can point to.
Esperanza didn’t look at the back of the book to see the answers, instead she added a challenge for herself. She is now portraying a huge role in the house because, of her bravery. Esperanza is becoming a young women at a fast rate. And, Esperanza is learning about tons of new things: Like how to grow food. How to help the babies and Children.
Another role model Esperanza has is her neighbor, Alicia, the most positive influence she meets in the story. Alicia is a strong independent young woman who spends most of her days cooking and cleaning for her family because her mother passed away. “Alicia who inherited her mama’s rolling pin and sleepiness, is young and smart and studies for the first time at university” (31). Esperanza admires how smart Alicia is, and, from her, Esperanza learns that studying hard will better her life. Esperanza understands it will not be easy: “Two trains and a bus, because [Alicia]
Esperanza Rising is a beautiful book written by a Mexican author named Pam Munoz Ryan. This book has earned several awards including the Pura Belpre Award. This story, based on an actual person, takes place in Mexico, but it gradually changes to the United States. People come here to support their families and earn respect which they would not have gotten in Mexico as peasants. The story tells about the discrimination and hardships the Mexican people had to go through when they first got here.
The next day Esperanza was in the stables feeding Scarlett when she heard the faint sound of horse hooves on the ground. She thought it was only one of the servants coming back once again with no information of Miguel, when she realized that there was no horse gone from the stable except for the two that were her dad’s and Miguel's. There was a sudden spark of hope rising in her chest, from where she didn't know but it didn't matter as long as it was enough to bring her best friend
