Many authors, like Lois Lowry, use a literary device called foreshadowing. Foreshadowing gives the readers an indication of events that will happen later in a story. One example of foreshadowing in The Giver by Lois Lowry, is when Jonas sees the apple change. Asher and Jonas were just playing catch when Jonas noticed, “the apple had changed. Just for an instant. It had changed in mid-air.” (Page 30) Later on, Jonas is looking out at all the faces at the ceremony, and the same thing happens again. “The thing that happened with the apple.
