As popular music producer, rapper, and artist, Fetty Wap once said “My whole thing is loyalty. Loyalty over royalty; word is bond.” as humans we see symbols in nearly every form of literature, from urban pop culture to shakespeare. In the play Macbeth by William Shakespeare a loyal lord the king ends up receiving a new title and in turn receives more power and becomes next in line to the throne. As he realizes his new found greed for power Macbeth ends up assassinating the current king, King Duncan, he also is influenced by more greed and kills his best friend, Banquo, in an attempt to stop his son from overthrowing him. In the beginning of the play when Macbeth first finds out that he's been promoted to Thane of Cawdor. After Macbeth has been told his prophecy he returns to camp and is then greeted in the morning by news of him becoming the new Thane of Cawdor. “The Thane of Cawdor lives: why do you dress me in borrowed robes”(1,3,108-109) this depicts how at one point Macbeth was loyal to the king, Duncan, but once he was given the new title he became thoughtful of his new power and soon realizes that he wants more of it. Another interesting example of this is when duncan names his oldest son, Malcolm, the Prince of Cumberland which is the next in line to the throne. “The Prince of Cumberland! That is a step on which i must fall down, or else o'erleap, for in my way it lies.”(1,5,48-50) This indicates that Macbeth has already came up with plans of becoming king and killing Duncan, the only thing in his way now is his son Malcolm. We see blood used to show the betrayal of all that Macbeth held close to him. First when he killed duncan and he speaks to his wife about it.”Neptune's ocean wash this blood clean from my hand.”(2,2,59-60) This demonstrates that Macbeth no longer has any loyalties towards the crown because he has just killed the king, although yes he does have regrets about it, that regret is soon replaced by more greed and a lust for power. Another example of blood as a symbol is when Macbeth is speaking to one of the murderers he hired to kill his best friend, Banquo. “Blood upon thy face, ‘Tis Banquo’s then.”(3,4,13-14) This conveys how not only is he no longer to the crown but also his best friends, he has become so filled with greed that he only knows one thing, that being his search for more
