Is Macbeth really a good person? In Macbeth, by William Shakespeare, the main character Macbeth is married to his wife Lady Macbeth. Macbeth is first the Thane of Glamis then becomes the Thane of Cawdor and then becomes the king of Scotland. Macbeth starts off as a nobody and then becomes a tyrant. The tragic hero evolves throughout the play seen through the blood motif. Macbeth goes from being brave to guilty to brave because of Lady Macbeth’s greed for power.
At first, blood represents Macbeth’s bravery because he is willing to do anything to protect his country. Macbeth shows his bravery by fighting and killing enemies during war: “For brave Macbeth (well he deserves that name),/Disdaining Fortune, with his brandished steel,/Which smoked with bloody execution” (I. ii. 18-20). The use of the blood motif signifies Macbeth’s bravery. Macbeth uses his sword to kill many people who may hurt Scotland. Macbeth is extremely brave in this situation because he is killing people and fighting in a war which is extremely dangerous and risky to himself. Blood also signifies Macbeth’s bravery because he fights for Scotland. When Macbeth walks into the room his nobles are asking, “What bloody man is that?” (I. i. 1). Macbeth kills Duncan which creates his guilt: “There’s no such thing./It is the bloody business which informs/Thus to mine eyes” (II. i. 59-61). In this case, blood signifies Macbeth’s guilt. Macbeth gets this guilt from planning to kill Duncan, even though Duncan is the king. Blood is also used to represent Macbeth’s guilt from having the murderers kill Banquo.
