Lit devices for Anthem by Ayn Rand Symbol: A symbol is a thing that represents or stands for something else (google) Example: “ Then we knew. We were in the Uncharted forest. We had not thought of coming here, but our legs had carried our wisdom, and our legs had brought us to the Uncharted forest.” (Rand, Ayn. 7.3. Anthem) Function: The Uncharted forest is a big symbol for all the mysteries in the society that Equality lives for and tries to learn about in the beginning of the novel. However Equality can only learn those mysteries alone. No one in the society he lives in has been able to enter the forest so he must go fourth and discover what lies ahead on his own. The great things that he discovers are the word “I” and previous things …show more content…
It is the word by which the depraved steal the virtue of good, by which the weak steal the might of the strong, by which the fools steal the wisdom of the sages.” (Rand, Ayn page 97 Anthem) Function: The journey that Equality takes to the Uncharted forest helps him come to a realization that he doesn't want to be dictated anymore and doesn't want to say “We” he wants to say “I.” This excerpt shows us the full transition from the collective society to a new individualized society. This simile also contributes to the overall theme of how a collective society can poison human potential. It does this by comparing it to a limestone and the weak stealing from the …show more content…
However the adults don’t. Milk is often associated with innocences and childhood. The Korova Milkbar is a symbol for many things such as the “moods” of innocence and wrong. So as they drink the hallucinogens it shows us the crew is slowly losing their innocence. In other words by adding hallucinogens it shows us that they are choosing to poison their lives and making them the criminals that they are. Also the pure white color of the milk in some ways symbolizes the similarities among the teens that drink it. Symbol: A metaphor is a figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable
Metaphors are considered to be one of the most important forms of figurative languages used in everyday speech, prose, fiction, and poetry. According to the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, a metaphor is “a figure of speech in which a word or phrase that ordinarily designates one thing is used to designate another, thus making an implicit comparison” (Van Engen, 2008). Metaphors are used to enhance imagination of the reader when reading stories and poems. Metaphors make imaginative comparisons between two completely different objects; one object said to be another. For instance, in the poem Casey at the Bat, the author uses a metaphor to compare players to objects by stating the players are those actual
During Equality’s first days in the Uncharted Forest, he starts to realize that perhaps there is more to life than the beliefs of the collective. The simple act of going into the Uncharted Forest was forbidden; however, Equality feels as though the forest is the place he is meant to be. While exploring the forest, Equality notes that “the trees parted before [him], calling [him] forward. The forest seemed to welcome [him]” (Rand 79). In this important part of the novella, Rand utilizes personification of trees to convey the idea that the forest is not as scary as the Council made it out to be. It is, in fact, quite the opposite as the trees welcomed Equality with open arms like a human would do when embracing a newcomer to a community.
Naturally, the narrator feels the pressure of being a minority. At first, he wants to be like everyone else, to be a part of white society. Then, he realizes that such society is not what he imagines it to be. As a result, he wants to reconnect with his family, this time appreciating them as his own. Nevertheless, the narrator is afraid of what his father
a metaphor, which is the comparison of two things by just stating that one thing is the other.
The one in which appears similar to today's society. Everyone thought Equality was cursed, but many people think and sometimes act the exact same way that Equality acted throughout the novel. When faced with being outcasted, people tend to be depressed. But, Equality persevered and was able to do great things for the better of his fellow man, even when they treated him like he was nothing but a peasant; a street sweeper. Just because society treats others who do not follow their trends like people who are weird and outdated does not mean that they can make a difference. It is because of innovators like Equality that the world even has a society to begin
I believe that Ayn rand was trying to tell us that people will blindly follow the people that are ahead of them in life. Some examples are when they started this new age of humanity they made sure that everyone was equal although some being more equal than others. Then they also completely got rid of some things like freedom, individualism, and the free use of electricity. Even though some people might not agree, Having a government that controls what you chose works because people who are scared and are not leaders can be led astray from what is right.
In The Novel Anthem The character equality’s sense of mortality at the end of the novel differed from his society’s institutions, practices, and officials. The choices and actions that determine the purpose and the course of his life, alter gravely throughout the text .From the very beginning to the very end, the audience can easily depict a change in the character’s mental,as well as mortality. In the very beginning Equality was full of curiosity,he could spot his indifference to the others,he also knew he could not think of himself as an individual.Everything done, would have to be done for the good of his “brothers.”He automatically questioned authority, and had a hard time conforming to society.
In the first chapter of the novel, readers see that, at an early age, the citizens of the society are taught to think nothing of themselves and more of the World Council. Equality tells us of his childhood in the Home of the Students where they were required to say the following every day, “We are nothing. Mankind is all. By the
In “Anthem” by Ayn Rand Equality 7-2521 lives in a society where there are many rules and controls. The people in this society exist to coexist. These rules cause them to have no individuality. Everyone is completely equal. Equality knows that he is different and that no person was made to be the exact same as the one before.
Rand starts the mood of very dark and foreboding. Equality starts if the book talking about sins we as humans have made. He expresses himself saying the world is a dark place (Rand 17). On page 17 paragraph one to three all he speaks about is we have broken laws. A direct quote of this is, “We have broken the laws”. Rand shows how unhappy Equality is in the house of students. During paragraph four line 1 page twenty one Equality says, “We Equality 7-2521, were not happy in those years in the Home of the Students. Equality later states it was not that learning was too hard for
This is the worst transgression in this society, It is the only crime punished by death. This quote is one of the most important phrases of the book. My visual image demonstrates Anthem by that it show many people in grey who are Equality's brothers. Everyone of them is equal and are all one. The green one is Equality, Equality is different than the rest of his brothers.
Equality in the novel is described to us as, “We are twenty-one years old. We are six feet tall, and this is a burden for there are not
Equality is placed in a society, which he is unique and unlike the rest. He is not like the others he is curious of the unknown, while the rest are carless and do not dare to expand their knowledge. “We looked upon the faces of the Council, but there was no curiosity in those faces, and no anger, and no mercy” (63). Using these words to describe the members of the Council of the Home helps express the society that Equality 7-2521 is living in. The differences amongst Equality 7-2521 and the government show the clash between them. People in the society are hesitant to do the actions that they are told to do, but Equality 7-2521 feels pride in the actions he is not suppose to take part in. “Two men stood by the post, naked but for the leather aprons and leather hoods over their faces” (64). As these men hide their identity from doing an action they would be shameful for, in contrast Equality 7-2521 has no shame for the sins and laws that he disobeys showing the differences amongst Equality 7-2521 and the rest of society. Equality 7-2521 has “evil” in his bones, he is taller then the rest of his brothers. “Our body is healthy and strength returns to it speedily” (67). Not only is Rand showing Equality 7-2521 physical strength but also his strength to be different and be an individual. His physical strength to over come the lashing he went through does not stop him from breaking free, but
The power of using metaphors What exactly is a metaphor? A metaphor is a figurative expression or image where you can contain the subject of your argument. Finding a good metaphor is difficult, but once you have one, the expressiveness is great. The essence of a metaphor is understanding and experiencing one kind of thing in terms of another.
At first, the narrator cannot grasp that his grandfather was fighting against oppression in his work he was compliant to white men. But as he progresses as a student the denials of the system become more clear it is not clear if white men wish for him to advance or not. The narrator’s worldview has become more
