Under the righteous rule of Genghis Khan, the Mongols killed over 40 million people, while conquering a vast amount of the 14th Century world. This land would grow to be the massive equivalent of eight modern day countries including the entirety of Russia and China. Although commonly described as savagely brutal Barbarians, we must ask ourselves, “how ‘Barbaric’ was this great band of warriors?” With all things considered, the Mongols can, in fact, be described as a barbaric people based on the fact that they exhibit violent, uncivilized as well as destructive tendencies.
The Mongols can be considered when associated with their violent actions. There are countless examples of barbaric actions the Mongols have committed. According to Ata-Malik in The

To conquer all the land shown on the map of The Mongol Empire circa 1260-1300, the Mongols would most likely have needed to destroy lives, communities, and history (Document 1). If we compared Adolf Hitler or even a modern day world conqueror attempt such as ISIS, neither have anything on the destruction the Mongol armies caused. Hitler only conquered 1,370,000 square miles and ISIS has conquered 13,000 to 35,000 square miles (Huffington Post) (Document 1). The Mongols controlled 4,860,000 square miles, that’s more than three times Hitler's attempt. In the book Genghis Khan: The History of the World Conqueror by Ata-Malik Juvaini (Document 4), when the Mongols attacked the Persian city Nishapur, they didn’t just stop when they won the battle. The Mongols made sure nothing was left. All the survivors were moved to an open plain and the city “be laid waste in such a manner that the site could be plowed upon; and that … not even cats and dogs should be left alive…”. That is total destruction. Not only did the Mongols defeat their enemy, they made sure that they would not be an enemy again. This points towards how barbaric the Mongols were when conquering other
Some people would say the Mongols were a key development to civilization. However, the progress they made is nothing compared to their cruelty and the process they used to conquer the majority of Asia and parts of the Middle East. The Mongols were originally a small, nomadic tribe that originated from the steppes of Central Asia. The tribe placed little value on objects, considering they moved around in yurts and hardly settled. Led by Genghis Khan, they conquered land worth double the size of the Roman Empire. The Mongols were greedy, bloodthirsty barbarians who had little to no regard for human life. They went to unthinkable lengths to conquer land while destroying countless ancient cities.
The Mongols were a group of barbaric people who lived in an uncivilized manner and considered savages due to their primitive actions and ways. The Mongols were barbarians, due to information from the resource packet, “The Mongols: How Barbaric Were The Barbarians?” From prior knowledge of the mongols, many videos that have been watched for educational purposes contain John Green speaking about how savage and barbaric these “people” were. This helps inference that many others think they were barbaric, but were they really? Many actions and evidence record savagery from them and claim to prove that they were barbaric indeed.
During the 13th century, a small tribe situated in central Asia conquered much of the ancient world including and not limiting to Asia, the Middle East, Eastern Europe, reaching as far as from Korea to Poland, and from Vietnam to Syria. Though they were successful with much of their battles within the 13th century, they were nicknamed the barbarians. This is because of how barbaric and brutal their actions were in their time of attainment of the land. The Mongols have been known as the most Barbaric of their time and as of now there has been no tribe or group of people who would could be compared to them.
The Mongols were constantly conquering new lands of insanely large sizes. They acquired land masses as big as 4,860,000 square miles all around. (document one) They were like terrorists to another persons home and another mans land with their crude actions and constant killing. Genghis Kahn alone conquered the largest amount of land, in fact being 4,860,000 square miles. Thats bigger than the body of the United States alone, and there’s no way that this man acquired all this land just by marching in and asking if he could take over. He just took over with the complex army he’d formed. Their army was just as hardcore and serious as they were. The faults of one man could result in the death of ten. The act of ten men could result in the death of 100
One of the ways that the Mongols were able to conquer so much land was through extreme brutality when invading. For instance, document 2 clearly demonstrates their cruelty: “these Tatars [Mongols] spared none, slaying women and men and children, ripping open pregnant women and killing unborn babies.” In addition, document 4 reports the incomprehensible number of deaths from several
Mongolians were extremely violent, lead with a fierce government and a fierce leader known as Genghis Khan. Their ruthless acts of violence and war has conquered more land than any other known commander. Genghis Khan himself has conquered approximately 4,860,000 square miles (Document 1 Table) compared to all the other commander totalling on average, approximately 1,659,166.7 square miles. Another thing that makes Mongols so violent is the stories of their deeds. Document 4 tells a story about an army of 300 mongols invaded a Persian city with 3,000 archers and laid waste to everything including animals.
One of the most well known barbaric tribes was the Mongols from China, led by the powerful Genghis Kong. Accoring to Document A, Genghis Kong and his army conquered the largest amount of land of any world conquest from the time period. They covered
The Mongols were a fearless and powerful group that dominated Asia and Eastern Europe during the 13th century. They did this through their battle tactics. The Mongols often fought on horseback and surrounded their enemies, which was an extremely efficient way to conquer. Their battle tactics portrayed them as barbaric and scary, enabling them to surround and conquer lands. Throughout the 13th century, the Mongols portrayed a barbaric image to the rest of the world due to their battle tactics, severe punishments, and their ability to conquer great amount of land.
Throughout history, various peoples have been considered harsh, violent, and uncivilized. One empire well known for its either barbaric or kind nature, are the Mongols. Based on the documents, the attitudes of various people towards the Mongols in Eurasia from the 13th century to the 14th century were positive, neutral, and negative.
The Mongols are barbaric by the way they treat others and how they make their laws and how they keep the order but the Mongols did not show barbaric when it come up about organizations they were good.
Another sign that proves why the Mongols are not barbaric is how organized their society was and the strict laws and punishments that were in place, but also the tolerance that they showed to others. The Mongols showed tolerance to other religions by sitting leaders of Islam, Buddhists, and Christians all together and asking for them to explain why they believe their religion is the right way: “Here you are Christians, Saracens, and tuins[...] He therefore wishes you all to meet together[..] and each one is to write down what he says so that he can know the truth” (William of Rubruck). This primary source shows how the Mongols just wanted to live in harmony with others; although they wanted to rule over everyone they had no problem letting people continue with their existence. Period One described a barbarian as someone who is uncivilized and violent, and based off of this definition the Mongols are the exact opposite of a barbarian.
Furthermore, the Mongol empire expanded their territory an immense amount, Genghis Khan alone conquering 4,860,000 square miles (Document 1). While rising to power the Mongols wreaked havoc and destruction on conquered lands. However, their contributions to the growth and development of these lands, an era known as Pax Mongolica, far outweighs the devastation brought to numerous amounts of lands and people. Many of the lands under Mongol rule benefited from it, for instance, in China and Persia economic development and movement increased and improved and a variety of industries prospered. Charles J. Halperin writes, “In both China and Persia the Mongols had taken up
The Mongols were barbaric in the terms that whenever they conquered land it required a lot of violence, but it was productive since they had more square miles than other world conquests (Document A). Mongols strategy was barbaric to the extent that they kill you even if you are not at fault.
Also, while conquering this abundance of land, the Mongols did kill much people. This was look upon as ruthless and unpeaceful. But, what people don't know is that after the
The Mongols were first off very brutal people whose only focuses were to kill people to get what they wanted, land. One reason why the Mongols were so brutal was because their brutal leaders who told them what to do and go for. According to the background essay on the Mongols “Numerous chinese cities fell, including where Mongol slaughter was so great the streets were said to be greasy with flesh.” This was all done under the leadership of Genghis Khan who launched this army. Therefore, Khan led this army
