In the Merchant of Venice, a lot of the text in the book is sorted into sections of racist text, mainly because it has different parts of text with racism in it. Either it’s done on purpose or not, it is planned to be taken exactly as it is without any question. The Merchant of Venice is usually seen as a anti-Semitic play, and therefore seen as a less debatable Shakespeare play over the other ones. But, there are still questions to as if the play can either be considered entirely as a anti-semitic play, or if it is just a ordinary play for shows that are similar and still relevant to this day.
In The Merchant of Venice, the main criticism concerning Anti-Semitism is the character Shylock. The play shows him as a Jew who has caused a lot of arguments throughout the play. However, the obvious admiration of William Shakespeare in our modern society has prevented us to see the play as a very racist one. But, there are certain times in The Merchant of Venice that are definitely anti-semitic like for example Lancelot's statement, “the Jew my master... is a kind of devil” (Act 2 Scene 2).
