She romanticizes the war by calling "any war wonderful that is for the freedom of the general population who have been battling for a considerable length of time against the cruelest abuse." It's difficult to make sense of if Editha really adores George, or on the off chance that she is overwhelmed by the prospect of having somebody chivalrous to …show more content…

In William Shakespeare's romantic tragedy, Romeo and Juliet, the two main characters are people from enemy families, who fall deeply in love. Romeo and Juliet is one of Shakespeare's most famous plays. Shakespeare uses many stylistic devices to create this tragedy but most importantly he uses irony to develop this tragedy. Verbal irony is used to create humor and relief the audience, While dramatic and situational irony are used for tragic effects. Irony can can be found throughout the play. Shakespeare uses 3 different kinds of Irony: Verbal, situational, and dramatic irony to create the tragedy know as Romeo and Juliet.
William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is a tragic story about two lovers who are from two disputing families, and their eventual suicides. Shakespeare uses dramatic irony throughout the play to create tension for the audience and foreshadow the ending. Dramatic irony is when the words or actions of characters in a story have a different meaning to the reader than to the characters. This is because the reader knows something that the characters do not. Romeo and Juliet’s death could have been prevented if the characters in the story weren’t so ignorant of their situations, and often times the reader recognizes this.
William Shakespeare, a genius of his time and author of Romeo and Juliet, created conflicting ideas between true love and courtly love throughout his play. He defines true love as clear and simple, and courtly love as complex and not legitimate. In Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare uses figurative language to show the contrast between true and courtly love.
In Medea, Euripides uses irony to convey the fact that the female protagonist is strong in the androcentric society and the male protagonist is weak. In the article “Male Medea,” Nancy Rabinowitz describes the protagonist as “the transgressive woman, [or man] inside the woman's body, and her story gives the lie to the gender story--of the woman as victim” (16). Medea, the female protagonist, has the power to control and manipulate any character in the play. This is proven when the Tutor says “Madam, your sons do not have to go into exile; the royal bride gladly took the gifts in her hands; there’s peace now, with her and the children” (1001-3). This represents irony because the sons do not go into exile, but are instead killed by their masculine,
Shakespeare uses numerous literary devices such as dramatic irony throughout the play. Even though all of these examples are different, they all share the same central idea. The central idea of these examples of dramatic irony is the love that Romeo and Juliet express towards each other. An example of dramatic irony from the play occurs towards the end of Act three. This is when Lady Capulet and Juliet discuss the conflict of Romeo and Tybalt. Lady Capulet thinks that Juliet is crying because Romeo killed Tybalt. Romeo killed Juliet’s cousin, after Tybalt had killed Romeo’s good friend Mercutio, right in front of him. However, it is evident to the audience that Juliet is crying over Romeo because he has been banished from Verona, for

Edith Wharton’s brief, yet tragic novella, Ethan Frome, presents a crippled and lonely man – Ethan Frome – who is trapped in a loveless marriage with a hypochondriacal wife, Zenobia “Zeena” Frome. Set during a harsh, “sluggish” winter in Starkfield, Massachusetts, Ethan and his sickly wife live in a dilapidated and “unusually forlorn and stunted” New-England farmhouse (Wharton 18). Due to Zeena’s numerous complications, they employ her cousin to help around the house, a vivacious young girl – Mattie Silver. With Mattie’s presence, Starkfield seems to emerge from its desolateness, and Ethan’s vacant world seems to be awoken from his discontented life and empty marriage. And so begins Ethan’s love adventure – a desperate desire to have

It seems that George takes Martha comments with a grain of salt. He ignores Martha in a way that hints at the deep love he has for her.
Editha also possesses an unrealistic view of war itself as being glorious and sacred in nature. “And I call any war glorious that is for the liberation of people who have been struggling for years against the cruelest oppression. Don’t you think so, too?” (308) “I call it a sacred war” (309). Howells’s who was diametrically opposed to the idea of war, may have been subtly implying something here like, only silly young girls believe that war is a glorious or sacred enterprise. George’s mother, who has been through one war already and would be considered much wiser than Editha, holds a contrary view of war as being far from glorious and sacred as it only leaves mothers without sons and wives without husbands. At a time in which most authors were romanticizing and praising war as glorious, Howells was using realism in his story to expose war as being harsh,

Without doubt, Edgar Allan Poe’s story is one of the author’s masterpiece. The story is an exhibit of artistic genius with various literary features well incorporated. Among them, irony, defined as, “A figure of speech which is a contradiction or incongruity between what is expected and what actually occurs”, is the most evident. Allan Poe demonstrates the use of various types of irony throughout the play, which he uses to pass the intended message to the audience.
Kate Chopin uses irony in her stories to show true emotion. It is also used to show feelings as well. Throughout her short story "The Storm," several examples of irony come forth, whether it be verbal, situational, or dramatic, it aids us to stay focused on the story by keeping it interesting.
The mood alters a bit throughout the novel; however, most of it was solemn because at first, we can somehow visualize that Morrie is dying. There were times in the book where we can feel Morrie’s encouraging temperament, every time he had some funny times with Ted Koppel or Mitch Albom; with this, we recognize more of a heart felt tone. This also indicates a mood of enlightenment every time Morrie gives life lessons to them.
The kind used in theater Romeo and Juliet is a tragic drama genre. Among the examples that show theater Romeo and Juliet's tragic drama genre is when the draw if Romeo is delayed long enough for the Friar to arrive, he and Juliet may yet be saved. These shifts from hope to despair, reprieve, and new hope, serve to emphasize the tragedy when the final hope fails and both the lovers die at the end.
