While Anne Sexton´s poem, Courage, was published in 1975, the theme can be compared to Brandon Mull´s book, The Candy Shop War, which was written 32 years later. Both Sexton and Mull talk about having courage and taking risks for others, even if it means putting yourself in danger. Although they both talk about similar themes, Sexton uses similes, metaphors, and personification and Mull uses deep description and imagery. Sexton and Mull both address the theme of having courage and taking risks for others. Sexton gives us similes and metaphors to describe the theme to the reader. Sexton uses similes, metaphors, and personification to address her theme while Mull uses deep description and imagery to address his theme. In stanza one, Sexton gives us a metaphor. “When they called you crybaby or poor or fatty or crazy and made you into an alien, you drank their acid and concealed it.” In stanza two, Sexton gives us a simile. “If your buddy saved you and died himself in so doing, then his courage was not courage, it was love; love as simple as shaving soap.” Finally, in stanza four, Sexton gives us personification. “and at the last moment when death opens the back door you’ll put on your carpet slippers and stride out.” On page 252, Mull gives us an example of imagery and deep description. “A quick glance skyward revealed that the fireball was falling back toward the roof of the barn. She had inadvertently shot it almost straight up. Eric and Kyle dove through the hatch. Summer raced toward the edge of the roof, a Moon rock in her hand. She slapped the candy into her mouth as she jumped. Out of the corner of her eye she saw Nate fling himself off the roof and plummet to the ground
The first example of courage is when Melinda is told that she needs to read her suffragette report in front of the class. The easy option would've been to just read her paper in front of the class but instead she took a different approach, an approach she considered the right option. Instead of reading her report she writes on the board, "The suffragettes fought for the right to speak. They were attacked, arrested, and thrown in jail for daring to do what they

Although in some cases, the characters may not generally be perceived by the public to be courageous at all, they demonstrate extreme strength in
William Shakespeare once said, "For courage mounteth with occasion." William Shakespeare is portraying that courage comes when it is needed most. Shakespeare also displays that courage makes up for the strength that is absent in arduous situations. I agree with Shakespeare's message he is conveying in entirety. In the novels, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee and Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, the courageous acts are like one lone star lighting up the entire night sky.
Fear is what instigates courage, and is a major theme in both novels. George’s fear revolves around Lennie. He is afraid that Lennie will get them into trouble and make them leave their job, or he will lose his best friend and be alone.
The value of courage in the face of adversity is shown in Ender’s Game and To Kill a Mockingbird. The definition of courage is the ability to do something that frightens one. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus shows courage when he is against the mob who is trying to hang Tom Robinson. “A flash of pain fear was going out of his eyes… He put the newspaper down very carefully adjusting its creases with lingering fingers. They were trembling a little.” (Harper Lee pg 152) In this quote Atticus realized that the mob was very dangerous, but he had to protect Tom Robinson. Courage is something you use to overcome fear. In the book, Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry by Mildred Taylor, Mr. L.T. Morrison is a African-American who is very mistreated by whites. He is a very loving, loyal, brave, and kind person. Mr. Morrison proves that he has courage by showing that he is brave and not afraid of the Wallaces, losing his job on the railroad, and he helped papa go to Vicksburg even if he knew that he would have to face some consequences. Mr. Morrisons actions prove that he is not afraid to stand up in what he believes in. He will give up anything for the people that he loves. He shows that he will do whatever he has to do to be able to be treated equally.
In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, a prominent theme used by Lee is courage in the youth of Maycomb’s society. This is shown through Jem, Scout and Dill. For Jem, he informs Atticus that Dill has run away to the Finch family home, while Scout runs through the mob. Dill shows courage through being the one to first suggest touching the Radley house. The actions of these characters project Atticus’s definition of courage because he defines courage as, “It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway…”. In the situations the children face, they know that it is a risk to do what they’re about to do, but they continue.
The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines courage as “mental or moral strength to venture, persevere, and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty.” Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird flawlessly fulfills this definition of courage by depicting everyday people carrying out acts of bravery in spite of their dangers, fears, or difficulties. To Kill a Mockingbird centers on Scout Finch and her experiences growing up in a small Alabama town during the Great Depression. Throughout the story, Scout’s wide-eyed view of society changes as she realizes other people’s morals do not coincide with her own ideals. Several variations of courage are shown throughout the book, including Atticus Finch’s defense of Tom Robinson, Mrs. Dubose’s decision to give up morphine, and Boo Radley’s rescue of Jem and Scout.
