Sociological analysis of animal cruelty
There is a significant reason why animals, exist here on earth. They exist to make the ecosystem balance. One thing that hinders the animals to live here on earth is animal abuse. In addition, Some people are so harshed with their pets, if they have nothing to do or they feel bored from their home one thing that can eliminate their bored and it is to play with their pets, but if that pet can make a wrong doing even small act they will abuse it. Animal abuse is defined by (Ascione, 1993) as the intentional or malicious, infliction to the animals, whether by physical or psychological and the animals can suffer pain, deprivation also the death of those animals by the human. In many ways, definitions of animal abuse are becoming broad and it will evolve in the future, years that researchers defined it by their own understanding an also the needs of animals are changing. According to Susan Donaldson (2014), there are many types of animal abuse. These are the following: Fur farming: This kind of abuse is so dangerous, because animals are skinned alive and this is one of the cruelest on earth Dogfights: Some people will force the dogs to fight each other for their lives, because one will die and the winners can survive. Animal Experimentation: Some people will experiment the animals for their own good. They have no care of what happens to the animals, this kind of people have no feelings towards animals. Crush Video: Videos of animal abuse that performed by individuals. From farm to slaughter house: All of us doesn’t know what happen in a slaughter house, except for those who are working in the slaughter house. We don’t have any knowledge what kind of cruelty the apply to kill the animals. Pet abandonment: many pets are abandoned by their owner, …show more content…
Sociologists did not take the problem seriously since they tend to neglect the influence of animal cruelty in the relationship with human (Flynn, 2001). Research revealed the association between animal cruelties with anti-social behavior (which includes interpersonal violence). For instance, abused children have learned that the less powerful you are, the more chances you can feel pain; and to satisfy the need to feel control and dominate others, these abused children tend to hurt, abuse or kill the animals. And if the owner feels anger to their pet, they will kick it, especially if that pet is a cat. Animals also have the right to live in this world because they are living things. Finally, there are some factors that affect animal cruelty. Gender is one of the factors that affect animal cruelty. We obviously know that men are stronger than women in physical appearance. Thus, men are more abuser of animals because men are harsher than women (Henry, 2004). Men tend to hold their emotion just within their selves, but when the time comes that they wanted to explode their feelings; men tend to hurt others especially the animals just to be satisfied. In the study of Arluke and Luke, (1997), animal cruelty almost the offenders are male. Age can also affect animal abuse. For instant, abused children learned that they are so fragile and can be easily
Animal abuse is just the beginning of a trail of violence waiting to become undone. Most children who mistreat pets or animals usually are suffering forms of violence or dysfunction in the home. When an abuser kills the family pet he is
Murder and abuse cases never fail to startle society. Moral codes are flouted with unmatched rigorousness by these indubitable egregious crimes. Sufferers in these cases are often people. Nonetheless, these callous obscenities should not be seen as less important when animals are the victims. Animals undergo horrendous abuse due to barbaric individuals, greed, and unnecessary lab testing.
Children who live in homes where animal abuse is present are often abused themselves and unfortunately, sometimes carry on with the cycle of abuse later on in life. “More than 80 percent of family members being treated for child abuse also had abused animals. In one-third of the cases, a child victim continued the cycle of violence by abusing a pet (“The animal abuse home violence connection”, 2013).”
Animal abuse is a quiet epidemic that is spreading throughout the world. The amount of animal abuse is growing and we must do something to stop it. Animal abuse is not putting a choke collar on a dog to keep it from biting an individual; it is not killing an animal for food. Animal abuse is the knowing or intentional "(1) tortures or serious overworks [of] an animal"; the "(2) failing unreasonably to provide necessary food, care, or shelter for an animal in his custody; kills, injures, or administers poison to an animal; [or] (6) causes one animal to fight with another" (Title 3). The majority of states in the U.S. classify abusive treatment toward animals as a misdemeanor. A misdemeanor is punished by a fine of
“It is quite clear that in abusing animals we abuse our relationship with animals, and that we abuse ourselves. We become less human to the extent that we treat any living beings as things” (R.D. Laing). There is a very evident connection between animal cruelty and cruelty to other humans. In studies conducted between 1983 and 2004, 60% of children who met the criteria for child abuse/neglect had families that were cruel to their pets. In 88%
All around the world, people are abusing animals. Animal cruelty is a big deal because some people do not look at animals as being important; some people do not see a problem with hurting them. Animal cruelty can be define as being a malicious treatment that can cause undue pain or being mistreated. Seeing an animal get brutalize by some humans seems to be cruel. Getting kicked in the ribs, left for starvation and even used for entertainment seems to be heartless. Why abuse animals when they have not done anything to harm a human. If one must see what they are really doing to these animals, then animal cruelty would not be a big deal.
Inconsistencies in attitudes and behaviors towards animals largely accounts for why animals are a social issue. In the Article Having Our Dogs and Eating Them Too: Why Animals Are a Social Issue by James A. Serpell various excerpts are presented in order to represent topics such as the reasons behind animal beliefs and their uses, aspects of the “benefits” animals present, and views of the putative relationship between animal abuse and interpersonal violence. Both Internal and external factors affecting how people use animals and their beliefs regarding human-animal relationships are presented in the article. Internal factors include things such as human superiority and the mental capacity of animals. External factors include group membership
Over the centuries, animals have suffered from cruelty from humans. In the United States, animals are beaten, neglected, or forced to struggle for survival. Animals have been inflicted with pain from humans for reasons other than self-defense. They have been slaughtered for their food and fur for personal gain in profit. In a majority of cases they have even been abused for someone’s own personal amusement or out of rage filled impulses. In some cases animals are found and rescued. They are given the second chance in life to experience what life should be like compared to what they once had.

This article, Ascoine and Shapiro address the challenges of defining and assessing animal abuse, the relation between animal abuse and childhood mental health, the extensive research on animal abuse and intimate partner violence, and the implication of these
Finally, I feel like this topic should be discussion more because human does not consider animal as human. Some pet owner will take good care of them for a couple's year and start to treat they like they are nothing. I feel like this should be discussion more in society and this research will draw closer to
Each year, the most extreme cases of animal abuse receive media attention. Yet, the animal cruelty problem is more widespread than is reported in the media. Animal abuse and neglect is a nationwide issue, affecting thousands of animals nationwide. Cruelty to animals is defined as the infliction of physical pain, suffering or death on an animal, beyond what is necessary. There is a need to stop abusers from acting in such a horrific manner–preventing the neglect and suffering of the animals. What causes animal abusers to act in such a cruel way towards animals? How are cases of animal abuse being managed, and how should cases be handled? Finally, does the status of animals in society contribute to the rate of their abuse?
An ancient Greek philosopher and scientist Pythagoras was convinced that whoever kills an animal without any remorse can easily kill a man. Other philosophers were even more straightforward and indicated that cruelty to animals leads to wars. It leads me to believe that the attitude towards animals is not something we can merely write-off as a showcase of the innate “cruelty of man”, but an indicator of our society's ethical level. If more people become aware of the suffering and death of animals that we, as a people, have caused, and acknowledge it, it would be a small, but significant sign of moral growth.
In the last decade, the views and forms of animal cruelty have changed. Many people have different views of an animal’s rights or purpose. Some people believe that animals have no rights and are a piece of property to be utilized by humans. To others, animals can still be used by humans, but they have emotions as well. A few people consider that only certain animals with high intelligence like chimpanzees or monkeys, should not be used by man, and they should have all the rights that man has currently (“Animal Rights” , 2009). Domestic violence has a correlation with animal abuse. In a survey, 71% of domestic violence victims also reported that their abuser also targeted pets/animals. The most common animals who are abused are cats, dogs, horses,
