Expanding the American Dream
“The American Dream is a term that is often used but also often misunderstood. It isn 't really about becoming rich or famous. It is about things much simpler and more fundamental than that” (Marco Rubio). The American Dream was a great term to attract many immigrants to this country in the belief that families can restart and reach their dreams. The idea that one can radically change their life and become “rich” was extremely attractive and can give incentive into moving across the world to pursue. With today’s migration, economic, and lack of education situation we have in the United States the American dream no longer has the same meaning it once did. Coming from a family in which I am the first generation born in the United States, the American Dream has a more real meaning to me. My dad coming from Romania at the age of eighteen and his sister at the age of fourteen both had an American dream but, both pursued it at different angles. My dad, having to provide for his mom immediately after him and his family, established a life in the United States but was unable to go to college. Although, my aunt was able to get into Northwestern University and obtain an engineering degree. She then went back to school to get another degree and further develop her American Dream. My aunt decided to become a professor and now is doing what she loves. In her eyes she knows she is living the American Dream, or her version of it, with her family being a
