What does it mean to be an American? Some would say it means being born in the United States, attending church, or even watching football. There's much more to this country than any of that. The first amendment is freedom of religion, speech, and expression. Denying marriage to two individuals who love each other is denying them a fundamental freedom.Denying someone for not going to church is also denying them a fundamental freedom. Being an American means accepting others and welcoming them regardless of their religion or sexuality. For example in, Let America Be America Again. Langston Hughes states, “Equality is in the air we breathe.” Equality is being treated equally regardless if you’re straight, gay, pansexual, asexual, transgender,
What does it mean to be an American? In my eyes to be an American means to have privileges, rights, and freedom. America isn't perfect, but it is one of the only countries that have rights given to people of different diversities and gender. America does not have tremendous poverty. Instead we have choices given to us by the people who fought and died for the American people. Without George Washington and the other patriots who planted the first seed in the ground and help plant the American nation we live in now who knows what America would be like now.
Many people dream about being an American. They dream because they envision America as the land of peace and prosperity. But is it? At times it has been, and at times its not. It is hard for the United States to be correct all the time because they have been unwilling designated as the "World Police". Throughout history there have been examples politically, economically, and socially, where being an American is rewarding and times where it is embarrassing. To be an American means progress. We evolved from a world ruled by white men to a world of equal opportunity.
What it means to be American is a definition that people have not taken the moment to realize what being American means to them the most. The founding fathers introduced the revolutionary idea that each person's desire to pursue their idea of happiness was not a self indulgence. They also created a government to defend the right for everyone. Such as the pursuit of happiness became the driver of business spirit that also defined the American free market. The meaning of the American dream to me is something that everyone should keep in memorable to themselves because it is good to keep the good things in mind no matter what.
Do you consider yourself to be an American? Being an American is not just having a citizenship or living in America it is much more. According to the Scholastic News Online, when individuals were given the question of what it means to be an American, most of them described it as “being free” and having certain rights while others gave explicit examples and mentioned the fact that we as Americans receive opportunities such as “voting”. I somewhat agree with most of these individuals. I believe that being an American consists of having certain rights and a given amount of freedom, to a certain extent. I also strongly believe that by being American, we are guaranteed opportunity if we work hard for something. Being an American also means we have the power to make a difference and express what we feel in order to make this country better than before. Coming from a family that had a much more distinct experience than

How does our generation define what it means to be “American”? Being in America gives us the freedom to become who we want to be and, to do what we want to do. We are using technology to get places or to make a point. We want to support things we don’t know anything about. For example, Black Lives Matter. I’m not saying I know everything about it but I know enough. So one day as I was scrolling through Facebook I came across a post. The post was about a 9/11 “Never Forget” picture. A teen one or two older than me had said something along the lines of “When is our never forget day?” along with the hashtag “#Blacklivesmatter”. I got pretty upset by that. Not to mention it was said on 9/11. I was thinking about how they have a whole month to

Though sometimes questionable, America's overall image portrayed to other countries is an honorable one. America is known for its democracy and as well as being a land of opportunities and many freedoms. America's assortment of ethnicities and cultures is proof that our country is a desirable one. What does it mean to be an American? To have freedom, liberty, or to live a life that is enjoyable? Damien Cave, a writer for the New York Times wrote, “ Americans tend to talk and laugh louder, tell their stories more freely, and to walk with purpose — even when heading in the wrong direction.” Cave is not wrong when saying these things. Simply living in America doesn't define you as an American. Being able to proudly own that you're an american, giving up things to better the country, working overtime, helping those who are homeless, picking up the litter, loving your country for what it is. If you don't contribute, if you can't own it, and if you can't stand up for it, you're not an american. Being American is being free, having the right to believe in what you want, being able to not only have a dream, but make that dream come true.
