Many go hungry because of the lack of access to food. Fruits and vegetables are not available because those farms are not subsidized, much of government funding goes towards bigger farms that produce wheat and other grains. The end result is making carb-based foods cheaper and easier to buy. The purpose of this is to explain the hunger crisis here in America, why the cost of certain foods is higher than others, and how to help the crisis. To begin, I will explain where I got my information and how it relates to the research. “Feeding America” interviewed multiple people from different ethnicities, ages, and regions. Age range was 5 years old to the 85 years of age. They also have people who are single and those who have families. Some were …show more content…
In the documentary A Place At the Table they discuss the reasons why people cannot afford food. It involves children, White, Black, Hispanic, and Mixed. Again, they are in different regions of the country but they have the same issues. From an NPR article, “Hunger in America,” gives lists of why there is hunger in America. They have data from 13 million families and numbers from “The Department of Health and Human Services. It doesn’t give the background of the people; therefore, there is no knowledge if the numbers represent a diverse group. According to the collection of data, there are personal stories and facts as to why there is hunger. The interviews provided in “Feeding America,” Victoria and Steven from Barltette Texas explain …show more content…
Many close their eyes to the reality of the situation and it is overlooked as an issue by the government (A Place at the Table). The government does offer programs such as SNAP, food stamps, and WIC. Most of these programs may help the situation but do not eliminate the problem (Hunger in America). People need to be educated on the reality of the situation and understand the situations of others. The government also can help subsidizes the farmers who produce fruits and veggies (A Place at the Table). By helping those farmers it can make those foods more accessible. Grocery stores such as Wal-Mart and local places can donate the “undesirable” food to food pantries or churches, instead of throwing them away. People of the community can also get involved by donating. Donating can be many things but what any one person can give is time. Spending their time serving dinner to those, transporting food, shopping for food. Any little bit will help with the hunger that is found here in
The simple answer is that the majority of us are not nearly as passionate about the issue as we’d like to be. I know that I for one, am definitely guilty of this. While we like to believe that we all care deeply about hunger, most of us simply aren’t doing anything about it.
And as the book strongly suggested the topic of "hunger" is almost never publicly mentioned by our political leaders. Even in President Bush's inaugural address in 2001, the word "hunger" was never spoken (pg. 5). I found the following quote by George McGovern back in 1972 most compelling: "To admit the existence of hunger in America is to confess that we have failed in
Hunger in America is very important and dangerous. Hunger means that people are in need of
So, why do fifteen million children in America face hunger every day? How does this happen? Many people are on food stamps, and they can be extremely helpful, but it is difficult to feed family with them. Food stamps provide only a dollar per person for each meal, according to the organization, Food is Power. More often than not, unhealthy, processed foods are a lot less expensive than nutritious, organic food, and because of this issue, many people on food stamps reach for less expensive junk food. Unquestionably, healthy foods can be very hard to find and expensive in places like food deserts. Food is Power found that thirty-three percent of Americans live in food deserts. Of course, public transportation helps families reach grocery stores, but it still can be a lengthy trip, and in rural and suburban areas, there can be little or no public transportation at all. These issues make it a struggle for parents to provide healthy food for their
Does anyone ever think about the effect going hungry has on a person’s overall health? Yes, they may not be obese as the rest of the country, but there are other health effects that directly affect a person when it comes to being food insecure. Food insecurity is defined as the state of being without reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food. Hunger in the United States affects so many people, more than one realizes for a country that is so well established. Huger affects children, seniors, different cultures, people that live in the rural areas of the country, and even the working class Americans in your surrounding communities, essentially your neighbors! Our government has established a few programs to help curb this health issue for our public and some have shown to be very effective. You may not think of having food stamps would help someone with their health issues such as getting better sleep, or depression. But if one person’s life was saved by having a reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food source I would say this is a bigger issue in our country than we think it is.
Hunger is a big social issue facing America today. According to (“Do Something.com”) 1 out of 6 people face hunger in the US. Also 49 Million Americans Struggle to put food on the table. America is the best country in world, we shouldn’t have so many people hungry. Many people have thought of fixing this problem but one company has found a way to help fix this problem, this company is Feeding America. They have been giving people food since 1979. They’ve helped out 46 million Americans. ( feedingamerica.org )
For such a long time, hunger still remains a complicated issue in America. Unlike other countries, hunger in America is not just getting enough food, but rather getting the right food and making the right choices. This project is a perfect example of how difficult it is to create a balance and nutritional meal on a tight budget. For starter, individuals who are under this program might have to sacrifice for some of the less nutritional food if they want to stay under the budget, which might results in some long term effects on the individual’s health. Instead of being able to purchase fresh fruits and leaner cuts of meat every day, I was forced to purchase cheap products that are nowhere close to today’s nutritional standards. Now, it wouldn’t
Social Issue: The causes of hunger in the United States and the influences it has over the people affected.
It is because when people hear the word “America” or “Americans” they automatically stereotype us. When most Americans think of hunger the first thing they think about is third world countries. They believe with the assistance the government provides, and the job opportunities nobody should be hungry. That is just not the case because millions of Americans just don’t have enough food to eat. Even our government is not trying to productively find a solution to this problem. Recently the food stamp program, formally known as the Federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, received a $5 billion cut. Then when congress addressed the issue the only thing they accomplished was cutting the benefit levels further. It is unfortunate how many people do not believe this is a serious issue that needs to be addressed. We as a country need to do something about it (Resnikoff,
Every day thousands person dies from hunger. Therefore tons of americans are on food stamps this year. How can you take action to stop us hunger?
While most reports highlights the severity of hunger in many developing nations, many suffering from hunger can happen in our backyard too. In the US, prolific families suffering from malnourishment and food insecurity makes up 12.7%
The reality of hunger is one that is often suppressed and denied around the world. One huge misconception is that everyone who is hungry does not have a job. People argue that hunger is the fault of the person who cannot afford food. If they were really hungry, then they would have done something about it right? Surely, they aren’t actually hungry otherwise, they would have gotten a real job. Sadly, the victims of food insecurity not only have to face the challenges of hunger but also have to listen to the biting criticism of other citizens. Just as Quindlen said, the first step to ending hunger is recognizing
Generally speaking, thinking about hungry people makes me think about homeless people sitting under viaducts in Chicago, not people who have full-time jobs and families. I have also seen food deserts in Chicago, like the statistic that mentioned seventy-five percent of them are in urban areas. Recent news that can add to the portion of this paper about food stamps is an article that stated, “There are more people who receive food stamps in the state of Oregon than the number of all students enrolled in kindergarten through 12th grade throughout the state’s public schools” (Haverluck). That means that in Oregon alone, there are about one hundred and fifty thousand people benefitting from food stamps. There are also other types of aid available to needy families.
Around the world, and the United States, there is a hunger problem. To address the issue within our country, many government agencies have implemented progress to assist with providing meals for people and children. Such programs are WIC, SNAP, and Shelters, these programs help low income and families with no income so that they don’t have to worry about future finical
Starvation in America is heavily used when you also hear “donations” but have you actually sat down and looked into the problem? What causes it, and what we can actually do to help people? Is there really a way to stop people from starving?
