Did you know that 17% of Americans in rural areas live below the poverty line, and out of those 17%, 15 million of those individuals are children? (Hunger In America 2014). The month of September was Hunger Action month and many individuals helped raise awareness by taking the Food Stamp (SNAP) Challenge. This challenge consists of an individual living on the SNAP balance of a $6-7 per day budget for food. Many individuals came to the realization that this is a difficult budget, and does not meet the nutritional needs for a family.

According to the United States Department of Agriculture, “Forty-nine million Americans live in food insecure households in today 's society”. This is the problem that the current SNAP program isn’t addressing, that funding is not enough to help these forty-nine million Americans struggling to get enough food to feed themselves and their families. We need to provide them the food that they need in order to survive, but we also must devise a plan to give them the healthiest and inexpensive choices that they deserve. For example, why would it make sense that on average a box of strawberries is more expensive than a bag of chips and it holds less nutritional value? Within the United States, in 2014 we had 1 out of 7 children born into poverty (C., 2016). That is an outstanding amount of children starting life out with a disadvantage. Statistics show that the U.S. has higher poverty rates than other developed countries (O., 2014). When a child is born into poverty, they are faced with many challenges that people are not very cognizant of. Children living in poverty usually have trouble accessing proper healthcare, education, and nutrition. These simple things are taken for granted by most people, but all have a close relation to one’s wellbeing. When child’s health is poor and they are lacking adequate nutrition, they are more than likely going to struggle in school and potentially drop out. Poverty is a growing health issue for the youth of American. Poor nutrition is harmful for anyone but children have a more vulnerability and can lead to more potential long term consequences. The top five states in 2014 to rate the highest for food-insure children under 18 were Mississippi, New Mexico, Arizona, Alabama, and Arkansas. Feeding America is a food bank that is leading the fight against hunger in communities nationwide. Their network feeds more than 12 million hungry children nationwide with a variety of programs. Of the 12 million children that are served by the foundation, over 3.5 million are children who are ages 5 and under. Unemployment is a leading factor for poverty and hunger in American.

Imagine you are an academically failing student sitting in math class your stomach growls at you as you fail to understand what the teacher is trying to explain. Why? Because you are considered food insecure, so you don’t have enough food to create the energy needed to focus on school meaning that you could get held back. Think about this 16 million children are considered food insecure just in America. In Buncombe county 34,340 people are food insecure. Many people confuse hunger and food insecurity as the same thing however the are not. A person can be hungry because they didn’t eat breakfast, but someone who is food insecure doesn’t have access to enough healthy food. One local organization working to solve this problem is MANNA Food Bank.

About 16.7 million children lived in households classified as food insecure in 2011 (Federal Interagency Forum on Child and Family Statistics 2013). Food insecurity is limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate and safe foods or limited or uncertain ability to acquire acceptable foods in socially acceptable ways (Coleman-Jensen, A. & Nord, M., 2013). There is a way for the United States to help these families in need besides just giving them financial assistance; they could create a program focused on educating families on a healthier lifestyle and helping them start a self-sufficiency garden or implementing a community garden program.

In spite of the United States being among the most developed economies in the world, poverty and hunger continue to be a major challenge affecting part of the population (Plumer, 2013). According to American Diabetic Association, millions of people live without enough quantity of food consumption while others survive on food with poor nutritional levels (Drago & Goody, 2010). Almost 50 percent of overall food stamp recipients are children, and over 80 percent of the overall benefits are allocated to vulnerable families including the disabled, the elderly, or children. However, considering the current economic environment characterized by increasing food prices, low wages, and lack of jobs, the importance of food assistance initiative continue to become popular among million of American citizens, across the country (Plumer, 2013). This paper will focus on Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) popularly known as Food Stamps as one of the most important food assistance program in the Country.

Many underprivileged families suffer from food poverty. They lack access to food due to several factors. Lack of proper nutrition leads these families to health conditions such as heart disease or diabetes. Malnutrition is major issue even with all these different ways to obtain food. Several programs were created such as the Food Rescue Organization, Food Stamp Program, Hunger Relief Organization, National School Lunch Program, WIC, and much more. All of these programs have a common goal, to provide meals to families and students who are otherwise unable to obtain food due to financial conditions. Yet, there is still a meal gap of 81,367,396 missing meals in Nevada. That’s ridiculous! What’s even crazier is that more children lived in poverty
