Exploration or Reformation, Which was a bigger consequence? Some people believed the printing press was “the greatest weapon in the armoury”. Around the year 1440 a man named Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing press. In 1471 there were 15 printing presses in Europe, and by 1500 there were almost 200 printing presses. The Reformation and Columbus’ Explorations of the West were both great consequences of the printing press. The presses helped spread ideas and thoughts of people, with great minds and beliefs. It has been debated which of these consequences is more important in the history of man. The Exploration period is a greater consequence because of how it affected the world, and how the long term effects were greater than that of the Reformation.
The Reformation had many great effects on the church. The Reformation was started by Martin Luther who was a Catholic priest that was angry with his church. He was upset, because his church sold people their way into heaven and changed the meaning of preachings. According to Luther, people who pay to get into

In 1493 Columbus wrote to the King of spain of his discoveries of the Indian sea, which (according to Columbus) was a new route to Asia, but was really the Americas. In 1493 this was big news because the Europeans had no idea who or what was across the Atlantic Ocean. They were excited about the wealth and treasures there and they saw it as an investment. Columbus was on his ship returning from the Americas when he wrote a letter to the King, informing him of a new route he discovered that he thought, led to Asia. Paris, Basel, Antwerp, Florence, and Rome were all cities where Columbus’s letter was published in French, German, Spanish, Latin, and Italian versions. The printing press affected Exploration because in Rome and Florence letters of columbus spread out, which led to more people seeking to explore the
The first printing press was invented in around 1450 CE and this invention was able to duplicate writing by pressing an hard, inked object onto another piece of paper and this method is much more efficient and quick than just handwriting and copying everything that way. Exploration or reformation? Which was the more important outcome of the printing press? Exploration was the more important outcome of the printing press because more people learn about the world and what it has to offer, and the Printing Press made it so that people would want to know more about
The Reformation began in 1517 when Martin Luther challenged the Catholic Church on the subject of Indulgences. Martin Luther had no idea of the great impact this would make on human society and the world, this event revolutionise the course of human history. In the sixteenth century religion controlled everything that happened in Europe. So when Luther posted his 95 theses it cause a rebellion against the church, which Luther would regret. This rebellion launched a century of bloody war between empires.
to come to conclusion with the question asked did the printing press greatly affect reformation or exploration it came down to exploration, although they both greatly affected europe in substantial ways reformation had bigger impacts in europe as for exploration had impacts in europe and later on towards the end of the millennium bigger impacts across the world leading to the new discoveries, new religions and technological advances that reformation and what martin luther did is not a bigger cause of the printing press nor a bigger impact than
Reformation is the religious revolution that took place in Western Europe in the 16th century. It arose from objections to doctrines and practices in the medieval church, loss of papal authority and credibility as well as other societal, political and economical issues of the time. This revolution had a major impact on Europe and it gave way to short term and long-term consequences, which still can be seen today.
The Catholic Reformation was the response of the Protestant movement in the sixteenth century. By the sixteenth century, many people lost the trust for the Catholic Church because it was corrupt. Popes and Cardinals became involved in politics and were more like kings than spiritual leaders and Nepotism was rampant. This loss of trust led people to moved on into other branches of Christianity which includes, Lutheranism, Calvinism, and Anabaptism. Catholic Church’s realized it needed to re-establish itself, thus beginning the Catholic Reformation. The Catholic Reformation was successful because it triggered the start of The Society of Jesus and The Council of Trent which helped resolve the church’s corruption through education,
INTRODUCTION The Reformation is a significant development within a religious tradition. During the 16th century, many changes occurred in European society as well as the Church. These were mainly due to the Protestant Reformation, English Reformation and Catholic Reformation. The Protestant Reformation was initiated by Martin Luther around 1517, in Germany.
For the reformation to happen the populace had to begin to notice the problems within the church. The printing press is what allowed for the information to be spread at the speed and success it did. Which allowed for the widespread reproduction and distribution of
The printing press was an important factor in the development of the Reformation and Exploration. These both helped in the creation and development of the New World. Invented in the 1450s by Johannes Gutenberg (BGE), the printing press gave many people a new view of the world. In 1471 there were only 15 printing presses, but by 1500 there were over 200.(Doc A.) Many more people became literate and many people developed their own views of religion and what the world looked like. The printing press helped shape the world we live in today, most importantly our religions.
The printing press was a very useful creation that helped influence many parts of history. In early European history there were two sides to the advancement of the printing press known as The Reformation and The Exploration. With the Reformation comes three documents: A, B, and C which outline the importance of spreading Protestant religion through the printing press. The Exploration comes with two documents: D and E which implements the printing press by documenting Christopher Columbus’ discoveries. When it comes to debating which side was the most important consequence of the printing press, many have differing views.
The printing press had such an impact partly because it helped spread religion. In the textbook “World History” on page 364 at the bottom of that page it states “The new printing presses spread Luther’s writings throughout Germany and Scandinavia, prompting him to declare that “printing was God’s highest act of grace.” This reveals that even people back then admitted that the printing press made a huge change in society between the 1300’s and 1700’s. Then in document E it shows an image of people making books and
(CD #1) For example, the letter from Columbus on Document D shows how Columbus discovered new lands. It was written on his return voyage from the Americas. The letter states, “where I found many islands inhabited by men without number.” Because of the Printing Press, his letter quickly spread throughout Europe and was translated into many languages such as Spanish, Latin, German and French. When people read it, they were compelled to explore the world further.
In the beginning of the 1400s, books were all handwritten, and only institutions like churches had them. This made the chance for leaders that had access to books to change or censor some of the vital information withheld in them. However, in 1455, Johann Gutenberg invented the printing press, a machine that made it much easier to spread books and thus, ideas. This changed the entire course of history, making it possible for people to spread these ideas and discover truth for themselves. There are many specific instances of it, but it is hard to see the whole picture. The printing press, one of the most revolutionary inventions in human history, was an integral part of the Reformation during the 1400’s through the 1600’s.
The Protestant Reformation began in 1516 and changed the face of Christianity forever. the major causes of the Reformation are Martin Luther, the 95 Thesis, the Pope and the indulgences that he forced upon the people that were being caught Catholicism, and possibly the tithes which is an olden day tax from the church of Rome.
The Protestant Reformation took place in Germany. At the time they had a fractured government with no centralized power, meaning the king had limited power. The Protestant Reformation was started because of a man named Martin Luther. Luther disagreed with many things the Catholic Church was doing and believed it to be corrupt. One of the main things he disagreed with was the sale of indulgences, as only the rich could afford to pay their way to heaven. He also believed the priest were not being properly trained as some of them could scarcely read
The Protestant Reformation and European expansion have both left political, social and economic impacts throughout history. The Protestant Reformation which was started in the 1500’s, by a Catholic man named Martin Luther caused political instability and fragmented the Holy Roman Empire. It economically caused the church to go bankrupt and socially allowed for the rise of individualism among the people; Luther gave the people of Europe the long needed reason to break free of the church. The Protestant Reformation and the need for new converts lead to the rise of European expansion. European expansion into the west resulted in a political increase of power for Europe, the social increase in slavery, disease and racism, as well as the
